Not needed on the '14+ vans. Worst case is pressing and holding the radio power button for a few seconds.

Interesting, wasn't aware that they had changed this after so many years of using radio codes.

Do you know if the navigation system still needs a code?

Does your Walmart install batteries for free? Can you start/jumpstart your Odyssey? If so, you could drive back to Walmart and get it installed and get your core charge back.
Don't care, didn't even ask. I would rather do my own so I can look around, clean any leaves or debris from under the battery, etc.

If the installer is ocd he may use something akin to a mini jump battery pack on the terminals so the vehicle will retain all of the settings that usually get erased.
Somehow I just don't see a Walmart tech doing that. Maybe they do, but I'm leaning towards "not allowed".

I'm considering using my own Audew Jump Starter to retain my settings.

When I changed the battery on our ‘15 ex-l I just had to reset the clock—even the radio presets were intact. The vehicle somehow self detected the factory radio so I didn’t need to track down the code.
Good to know

Must be a regional sale. I had looked it up right before I posted. It is $98.76 at my local wally land in zip 28134

If your Ody came with an AGM battery, you should go with the AGM battery I suppose. The upper trims have the AGM batteries but I thought that started with the 2020 or so model year.
No AGM needed, but...

OK, so here's a weird one. This van was bought in July 2020, CPO. As I'm replacing the battery I see that the one in the vehicle is a 24R (not 24F) and 610 CCA (not 630). Honda part number 31500-TK8-A1. I called the dealer's parts department and the guy asked me if I knew if it was the factory battery. I said "No, I bought the van a year ago." He said that if it was the factory battery, it's possible that there might be a letter difference. Then I told him that it was only 610 CCA. "Oh, then that is not the factory battery."

As far as I can tell, that battery goes in certain Acuras, like the RX and maybe the MDX. Somebody must have screwed up somewhere along the way.

OR. If the battery physically fit, and the seller had RX or MDX and this battery was "older" and the other one was "newer" they may have swapped them before selling the Oddy.

I tried to take the new battery out of our Accord which got totalled. But. It did not fit in the Maxima. So, I had to send it along with the car to the salvage yard. The battery was 6 months old. :(

OK...so no one told me about the AHOOGA horn that was going to go off in my Bluetooth earbuds when I removed the battery cable!

Scared the crap out of me and took me more than a few seconds to figure out what was going on. Luckily I had my smart phone right next to me or I might still be wondering. (I was listening to some music at the time)

I have a NuStart remote starter in the van. It comes with the Drone Mobile app so I can control the remote start system with my smartphone. The system apparently thinks that having the battery disconnected is a rather important event so it sent a really loud alert to my smartphone which blasted my ears with a noise very similar to an AHOOGA horn. I almost dropped the friggin' wrench.

I looked at my smartphone trying to figure out what was going on and saw the "Battery Is Disconnected!" alert. When I connected the new battery, the alert was just a little "ping". I guess I was expecting some raucous cheering or something based on how much noise the disconnect made.

The designations "24R" and "24F" are interchangeable - the R and F stand for "reversed" or "flipped" respectively. They both mean that the positive and negative poles of the battery are reversed compared to what is considered normal or usual.

Don't worry about trying to get one instead of the other. It doesn't matter, as long as you get one of them. A type 24 battery (with no letter following) will not fit in your Ody because the battery cables are too short to accommodate getting them in the wrong orientation.

Thanks for that info but did you miss the part of about the 610 CCA vs 630? I did a bunch of searches and wasn't able to find any source that lists 610 CCA for a 17 EX-L.

I know that 610 and 630 aren't that far apart, but every source shows 630 and higher.

Then there's part number. Is a 31500-TK8-A1 the same as 31500-TK8-A2100M? On some parts sites, when I search for 31500-TK8-A1 it returns 31500-TK8-A2100M but shows GR24F/630CCA. Other sites are "Unable to verify part fitment for your vehicle" on the 31500-TK8-A1.

Just a tad confusing...even though I'm all set with the 24F-725 CCA Everstart Maxx. Installed already.

I did see that but I kinda glossed over it because it seemed clear you were going to replace the battery with an aftermarket one anyway.

I think anything over 550 CCA would work. I seem to recall reading somewhere that rating was a minimum for our vans (though if I'm out to lunch on that point I will happily stand corrected).

If you look on a Honda parts site, the battery that will come up is the 31500-TK8-A2100M:

This one replaces a lot of part numbers, it says:
Replaces: 31500-SD4-100M, 31500-SEP-A12, 31500-SEP-H03, 31500-SEP-X11, 31500-SJC-A01, 31500-SPL-002AH, 31500-SPL-2AH100M, 31500-STX-A00, 31500-STX-A01, 31500-SV1-A01, 31500-TK8-A01, 31500-TK8-A11, 31500-TK8-A1100M, 31500-TZ5-A01

The 31500-TK8-A01 is on this list too, so yes, it looks like it is the superseded part.

I don't think there's a "correct" CCA... as long as it's above the minimum. I'm having a hard time finding what the minimum is, exactly. Every parts website has a different recommended CCA.

My '07 had its battery changed in January 2018 by the dealership while under the ownership of the previous owner. Battery part number is 31500-SD4-100M, which is also replaced by the 31500-TK8-A2100M that fits both your '17 and my '07. Looks like the 31500-SD4-100M is discontinued now anyways... can't even find it on the parts website, just links me to the new battery part number (630 CCA). But my old 31500-SD4-100M is 550 CCA... I suspect that is the minimum CCA, otherwise the dealer probably wouldn't have used that battery. But maybe I'm giving the dealership too much credit. I'm not sure if the minimum CCA has changed for the 4th gen, but 550 CCA seems quite low to me. Regardless, it worked just fine.

I swapped my 550 CCA battery for a 600 CCA battery last week, just due to age.

I need a battery for my 17 EX-L. I don't have a Costco membership, just BJ's. AGM, Optima, OEM are all over $200.
BJ's has a Group 24F 700 CCA IBX (Interstate) battery, 30 month warranty, $90. Even with the shorter warranty, I could buy 2 and keep one as a spare. ;)
I told the tire shop guy that the price was so low that it scared me and he understood where I was coming from. He said he uses Optima batteries and when I asked him why he didn't use BJ's batteries he said "I drive high performance vehicles." OK...no need to get into the weeds with him.
How fast should I run away from a $90 battery?
I would use it.

I buy Walmart Everstarts. It's easier for me to find a Walmart then Costco. $100ish will get you handled. Warranty has been great. I've exchanged 3 with no issues (my fault 2 times).
I only buy Walmart batteries for my Honda’s, Maxx-24F are made by Johnson Controls, $98(when on sale $88), 750cca, 3yrs replacement warranty. Would be nice if replace before the warranty period but avg last between 4-5 years for me.

For what it's worth, I used AutoZone Duralast batteries for many years, with no complaints ... until I learned recently that the Walmart Everstart batteries are identical, made in the same factory, with the same warranty, and cost about 40% less. Installation is not included, but I don't mind installing it myself. I've had no problems with them.

The Interstate batteries at Costco are great. Just got mine for under 125. Go to Customer service for a trial membership or have a friend get you a Costco gift card.

I have a value battery from Walmart that I paid around $50.00 for over 4 years ago. I need a new battery!. Interstate is a good battery. And I will probably put one in mine before my luck runs out.

I'd run TO it. Last 3 batteries from BJ's (different vehicles). Do yourself a favor and get the higher rated battery for the extra $25 or whatever it is. Mine have all been great and price tough to beat. Often a coupon item, too. And you already have the membership. You can check online if they have the right one. But don't cheap out on capacities. The Ody's have lot's of power draws so it won't ever hurt to have more.

It's interesting how many people are offering battery suggestions 4+ days after I posted that I've replaced the battery.

You can stop now. I'm not replacing it again. :)

I ran the OEM in a 05 Odyssey for 9-years before a no start. I liked the first battery, so I bought another OEM battery. The second Honda battery lasted 4-to-5 years and then it was junk. I stick with Walmart Maxx batteries for ~$95 and if I have a problem, there is a Walmart everywhere. I haven't had a problem yet. I do know, I will never purchase another OEM Honda battery.
