I have used E-Z Drain oil valves (very similar to Futomoto) on my vehicles for years and have always used a hose adaptor so I can drain directly into a jug. I purchased a E-Z Drain for my new Ody only to find that it does not fit. The exhaust heat shield is in the way. The E-Z valve requires an adapter for the Honda oil pan thread which may be pushing it out too far. None of this was an issue on my 2014. Has anyone had success with a drain valve? I would be interested to know what brand/model and if you could use a drain hose adapter. Thanks!

I am with you. I tried for a while to think of a way I was comfortable adding a valve but I am just not comfortable with the Fumato on this van. The other alternatives are better since they dont stick downwards but there are still clearance issues. I decided on this van to just stick with the old drain plug. It sucks but I am not sure if Honda could have made it much harder to change oil with clearance issues with both the drain plug and the filter. The filter is impossible to change with the old honda filter wrench now I have to use a clamp type wrench to try to get the filter out with barely any clearance. I have never owned a Honda that was harder to work on. Its like they did it on purpose to make sure the mechanic / dealership is getting more business with all the electric cars now they need all the help they can get I guess.

I found this wrench on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0022ZFRM2/ The reviews say it fits our oil filter so I am giving it a try. I would feel much better if this wrench works on the Honda filter. The other oil filter wrenches smash or cut into the filter for grip. I rather a wrench like this so I can tighten and loosen the filter without heavy damage to the filter. I am surprised this is so hard to find given the way Honda is now placing these filters in difficult locations on many vehicles that really require a wrench like this.

It's great on fitting Honda Motorcycles, but not so much on ODYs. Too close to a lot of frame work, but it definately will fit the oil filter. When you get it and try it, please let us know... if it's a use-able tool or not.

Hi rtcusimano,
If you could snap a pic of your install, I would be very grateful.
Thanks!

I just received it and tried it on an extra filter and it fits like a glove. I still need to try it in action, but with the limited access to the filter this is the only wrench I could find that does not need to clamp into the filter for grip. The handles on the other universal wrenches are the same length except for one which is longer. I don't think I need the extra leverage of the longer handle. As for clearance I think this is the best option. I don't crank on my filters so all I really need is just enough to break it loose and will be good for tightening also without damaging the filter. This is the only wrench I found that will not put heavy marks on the filter and will be able to clear all the other engine bay components in the way.

I hope this will allow you to break the oil filter loose, I have been using one of the adjustable rubber strap handle type, it's akward and you can only turn it about a 1/4" each attempt, but the release the rubber strap a little and back it in to the first position and pull tight again. about 3 times and the filter is loose enough without breaking the seal, then I place a ziplock bag over the filter and unscrew it, still manage to get a few drips of oil here and there. Stupid Honda engineers, they could have built on the engine a oil deflector so it would drip straight down, but nooo, let's make it messy.

Yeah its certainly was an after thought for the engineers. The oil plug is practically draining on the exhaust pipe with barely any room for an add on valve. The filter is almost inaccessible and will not even work with their own official honda oil filter wrench. I did the oil change on my van for the first time and could not get the filter off with existing wrenches. Very annoying. So I looked into what people were using and it seems to be the clamp wrenches but they damage the filter, the strap is a decent idea but I know the grip is not the best, I really wanted something that grabbed like the official honda wrench but could get into the super tight area. This is the closest to the offical wrench there is that will still fit into the space. There are other reviews on Amazon for this wrench of people using this on Pilot's and MDX's so I guess this is a common issue with the new honda design scheme. They are not interested in having oil changes easy anymore so this type of wrench is really needed I think.

Fumoto valve model F106SX does fit yes. I personally don't like it hanging down since the van is pretty low already and am concerned with it getting hit by a parking stop or some other debris which could be a disaster.. I know there are many people using this, I love the Fumoto valve also and it has been on my last 6 cars but in this case I decided to skip it since the clearance is minimal and with the down hanging valve it just seems too risky for me for the minor convienience. The down hang is a little improved with the extension but that almost doubles the weight on the threads, I tired to make it work. I did have some minor downhang on my CRV Fumoto but that is a much higher clearence vehicle and never had an issue. To each his own.
