My van has 61k miles on it and yesterday out of nowhere, the malfunction indicator lamp light started flashing and the engine became very rough. Upon stopping and restarting, multiple system failure lights flashed. I had the van towed into the dealership and Honda is now saying it needs all new piston rings and cylinders 1, 3 & 5 were scorched. We have an extended warranty on our vehicle but they are claiming this isn't covered. We are waiting on Honda NA to review and follow up if they will cover any portion of this.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, did Honda resolve the issue by paying for the repairs and also extending the same resolutions as in the lawsuit? I see there was a class action lawsuit that was resolved due to these EXACT same issues. However, Honda was to have fixed these issues in the 2014 models. The dealership has said this is a minimum of $3500 to repair. Additionally, we have done constant maintenance on this vehicle and everything has been done at the dealership down to every oil change.
65k and the same issue! They want $4000

From the advice I received here, I looked for a "VCM Muzzler" on YouTube and then Google. Apparently there are millions of us with this issue.

I thought I was buying a reliable vehicle that would go forever.

VCM tuner appears to be another that does what the Muzzler does?

VCMTunerII is what I use and prefer for a myriad of reasons. Vcmuzzler can be found on eBay or by private messaging member "Verbatim" on this forum or you can private message "Maxud" for a MaxMuzzler.

Replace the spark plugs too. Those in the VCM cylinders are likely oil fouled. Fresh ones will expedite the recovery process.

Google defective VCM system in Oddys and the class-action that dealt with your same issues. Find the law firms that handled this class-action and run your facts by them..

After reading over these posts, the #5 cylinder came up as part of a faulty VCM diagnosis. I suggest this error may have been intentional, to exclude a warranty repair. Dealers might just be compensated for low average warranty repair costs, b ut I don't know this for sure.

From what my local dealer has done, and from reading comments on this forum about other dealership tricks, I would expect this from some Honda dealers.

But not all dealers are less than honest. I had very positive (honest) experiences at a dealership in Springfield, Mo (away from home, where I was vulnerable), not once but twice.

How do you do the disabling of the VCM. I ask Honda and they know nothing. I am having the rings of the #1 , #2 and #3 replaced.
All of your questions should be answered here:

The dealer will not know about it since it's not a Honda product.

It's a very common issue.....many have posted they need new rings. Instead they replaced their soak plugs and muzzled the vcm only to have everything cleaned up and resolved, also saving thousands.

the one thing about honda (maybe good) is their issues are consistent, which makes it easy to diagnose 80% of the time.

have a hyundai from hell in the family, all the issues with this thing are just weird shit, nothing on the forums and little in the service manual.
dealer is useless, might as well own an audi or mercedes for the amount they soak on diagnostics that produce no results.

the more I have to work on that effin hyundai piece of shit, the more I love honda acura toyota and lexus.

rant over...

Just curious what year and model are we talking about?
We have 8 different hyundais in our family/extended and all are problem free.
We have owned 2 down the line and zero issues.
The range from 2005 to 2019. Let's of theta2's in the lot.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel about Hyundai automobiles?

this particular arsehole is a 3.8 L 2012 Veracruz Limited... have witnessed similar "weird shit" issues on sante fe, sonatas and kias across the board
there is a reason the price entry point on that korean junk, is cheaper than their competitors.

Very typical response from Honda dealership, trying to fish even more money out of your pocket while you are down by suggesting timing belt job (which is over $1100 I am sure) 34,000 miles prematurely. I can't stand hearing these ripoff stories and I really hope the class action lawsuit either gets extended to include model years past 2013, or a new one gets introduced covering every VCM engine that Honda makes. I personally would push as hard as I can to make sure it is covered in full, and then trade it in for a Sienna if you really need a van going forward.
I hear ya however my 2012 had the piston work done by Honda at 65000 miles and here I am now at 84000 miles and timing belt blew and now I’m dealing with an engine rebuild. Do the timing belt.

some of those flat rate monkeys are an embarrassment to others in the trade.
