Answer: No. The newer 0W-16 oils can only be used in 2018+ Honda Fit CRVs, and Accord Hybrids. Honda has not back-specced Honda Odysseys for the newer oil. 0W-20 may be used in the newer design Honda cars above where 0W-16 is not available, however. Yes, using a "thinner oil" results in marginal HP and MPG improvement, but in this case, it's not worth the risk to your engine.

Why is this even a question/thread?

More people are interested in going "back" to the 5W30 oil that the J-series engines still use in the rest of the world...

I'd be more likely to change up to 0w-30 than down to 0w-16.
That's what I'm using. The fact they use 5w30 in the rest of the world made me a bit nervous to use 0w20.

I suspect that regardless of what you use (within reason), if you change it regularly and disable the VCM, engine oil will be the last thing to worry about on these vehicles. 185K so far for me. Hope it lasts a lot longer.

I tried 5w30 this last oil change and definitely noticed a difference in sound, almost like the engine was straining more, which it really shouldn't as w30 isn't a whole lot thicker but it was noticeable. I went back to 0w20 this last week when I changed it.

5w30 shears to a 5w20 within 30 minutes of use: Effects of Shearing - Bob is the Oil Guy
Negative. This article is 20 years old, written prior to GF-4 specs being introduced in 2004. Newer oils have significantly improved. Dexos 1 certification includes meeting a shear stability test standard. Oil shear is simply not a major issue anymore, especially with low viscosity synthetics that everyone specs, and that improved quality carries up to the higher viscosity grades.

Edit: this is what 3k mile oil change intervals are no longer necessary. Oils stay in grade and protect for much longer than they used to.

I'm not seeing anything in that link suggesting that "5w30 shears to a 5w20 within 30 minutes of use"

There is this quote from that article, though: "Synthetic oils do not rely as much on special Viscosity Index Improver additives and will experience little permanent viscosity loss." There is no reason to believe that a synthetic 5W30 would shear to 5W20 within 30 minutes of use.

" All base oils film strength will shear under stress or pressure. The real way to help prevent wear is to maintain higher levels of antiwear additives " - Effects of Shearing - Bob is the Oil Guy

ps did a Perfect oil change yesterday, 4.25 quarts of Mobil 1 EP 0W-20 with Mobil 1 Filter. Using BITOG, this is the best combo at the moment, I believe. Plan to leave in for 10-15kmiles. Resisted the temptation to blend in a quart of 0W-16 !

pps: using a higher viscosity grade than manuf. spec results in faster oil degradation due to longer residence time on hot engine internal surfaces- more on this next time.
