Hi all

Seeking advice on whether to have Honda do a power flush.

Few months ago bought a used 2017 odyssey, mileage now 135k miles. I quickly noticed a judder in shifting, Honda diagnosed and applied a software update and 3x drain+fill. All good for a month but now noticing some judder again, and there have a been a few times with hard/violent feeling shifts at lower gears. Wife is feeling nervous to drive it.

Took it back in and they are now recommending a power flush as per the next service bulletin. I am nervous about that pressure causing damage, from reading this forum. The alternative I see is doing some additional drain+fills on my own over next few months and hoping that resolves it.

What would you do?
Thanks
Brian

I'm not aware of any "next service bulletin".

How many miles since the 3x drain and fill + update?

It helps to understand why that is done. The judder is caused by worn out ATF, so the 3x drain and fill is done to get almost all the worn out fluid replaced, then the software update is applied to change the transmission behavior so the fluid doesn't wear out as fast.

Hard/violent shifts are often a bad pressure switch, which is a different (and also eminently solvable) problem.

Just called them. The software update and 3x drain was at 132582 following bulletin 17-043. Judder issues showing up again at 135261. They say the next bulletin is 17-044 which applies if still having judder after software update.

Interesting about pressure switch. So that may be unrelated to the judder. Possible to DIY that service for a novice or best left to dealership?

Anybody finding value in adding some Lubegard 60902 ATF Protectant when doing drain/fill, to prolong the fluid life?

Lubegard Red is awesome stuff - my Ody does well with it. Never had so much as a hiccup from the transmission in 7+ years, though I do have only about 77,000 miles (124, 000 km) on the odometer.

What the hell is a JUDDER? As opposed to a SHUDDER? 🤔

"Judder" is the word Honda uses to describe a shudder in the transmission. In reality, there's probably no difference at all. But we put a lot of attention on the word "judder" because it's a keyword to use at a Honda dealership to get the reaction from them you want.

Use the lubegard transmission protectant, red bottle.
If that won't fix your judder, shudder nothing but mechanical repair will.
It goes into every auto trans vehicle we have owned, over 20 and counting.
Only positive results.
It's the real deal.

Here is the TSB. 17-044 Honda Technical Service Bulletin . Honda calls it a flush, but if you read the TSB they explain that the flush is just a triple drain and refill. So this "flush" is fine. The TSB specifically mentions not to use other flushing procedures. There is also mention of taking a "snapshot",. which leads me to believe you need Honda specific equipment. For that reason I would leave this to the Honda Dealer.

Probably apples and oranges, but my 2007 EX-L trans did judder from get-go. Had software update early in it's life, which did nothing. Still judders today at +327K miles just like it always has. Wish you the best.
multiple drain and fills and some lubeguard red is the best you're going to get...

6speed on my 2011 has juddered since 60k miles, even hard clunks sometimes.

when you see the cost of a replacement/rebuild, you learn to live with it.

Thanks all.
The plan is to drain and fill with red lubeguard for the judder (multiple times as needed), and replace 2nd clutch pressure switch (28610-R36-004) for the occasional hard shift at around 20mph.
Will report back here with results.

My mistake. Our superior transmission with LUBEGARD shall not make fun of your little shifty gear thingy. 😑

I second the recommendation of LubeGard Red as a transmission fluid additive. I have a 1997 Accord, in 2016 the transmission died and I replaced it with one from a junkyard. I read on the Bob Is The Oil Guy (BITOG) forum that there are 2 schools of thought about which fluid to add. One group believes that only Honda fluid can be used. The other advises using Valvoline MaxLife fluid along with a bottle of LubeGard Red. I went with the MaxLife/LubeGard combo, it has shifted perfectly since then, but it's time to change the fluid.
