The car has around 3700 miles on it and I haven't driven it much due to Covid for the past 1 year. I did use it to move from WA to CA. CA requires smog and my EGR monitors are not getting set. Battery was never replaced and I do not know why it would get reset. I have already driven it 500+ miles following the drive cycle instructions from the manual with coasting at 55 etc..

Any other Odyssey owners faced this issue? Dealership wants 200 to even look at what is going on?

1. I would disconnect the battery and go through the relearn process again, shouldn’t take long. My Dodge Charger will complete the emission readiness checks in 2 cold starts and a 30mi mix of highway and city driving (no EGR).
2. The car is obviously under warranty, not sure why the dealership would be asking you to pay anything.

California... has laws about anything that emits gases, in order for you to change your title, the out of state vehicle must pass the SMOG test. I recommend the OP to do a advanced search on just the word SMOG as their was close to 214 pages to look through. I know there was some people saying what you did with your Dodge Charger to prepare for the emissions check.

For the 4 years I was out in CA. I never should have changed my title to CA, tthey had to install a Carter NONOX and retard the timing and change the idle mixture screw for less fuel usage. All it did was make my 68 Chevelle run terrible.

After doing a battery disconnect to go through a relearn process, it was still not successful.

Took it to another dealership where the advisor claimed that his technician knows how to fix it. Magically it gets fixed. I believe they did a software update and not sharing that information with me. I have another Honda in which I am about to make it in 40 miles. EGR especially gets set within the first 5 miles. Anyways I got my smog done and happy to move along with life. Thank you folks!

I'm currently having this issue with my Honda. I was told that warranty does not cover this, even the extra warranty that I bought.

Same boat. Moved to CA almost a month back. I have tried driving around, but EGR is a no go. I did have bttery replace more than a year ago. I do have the Honda care, but dealer want 190 for diagnostic.
Page 749 (EXL) of the manual does suggest this procedure

  1. 1. Fill the gas tank to approximately 3/4 full.
  2. 2. Park the vehicle and leave the engine off for 6 hours or more.
  3. 3. Make sure the ambient temperature is between 40°F and 95°F (4°C and 35°C).
  4. 4. Start the engine without touching the accelerator pedal, and let it idle for 20 seconds.
  5. 5. Keep the vehicle in (P. Increase the engine speed to 2,000 rpm, and hold it there for about 3 minutes.
  6. 6. Let the engine idle with your foot off the accelerator for 20 seconds.
  7. . Select a nearby, lightly traveled major highway where you can maintain a speed of 50 to 60 mph (80 to 97 km/h) for at least 20 minutes. Drive on the highway in (D. Do not use cruise control. When traffic allows, drive for 90 seconds without moving the accelerator pedal. (Vehicle speed may vary slightly; this is okay.) If you cannot do this for a continuous 90 seconds because of traffic conditions, drive for at least 30 seconds, then repeat it two more times (for a total of 90 seconds).
  8. 8. Drive in city or suburban traffic for at least 10 minutes. When traffic conditions allow, let the vehicle coast for several seconds without using the accelerator pedal or the brake pedal.
  9. 9. Park the vehicle and leave the engine off for 30 minutes.
Me and wife both have done this twice, but still no luck.
Do the different driving modes matter.. We did with Eco On and I think the A/C was on too.. we can do with the A/C off when we dont have to haul the kids for the drive... but I am not sure if that would matter..
Are there any other recommendations

Don't waste your time following this instructions any more, we have done more than 10 times, even drove from MD to NYC and back, nothing works. I am gonna try 5350 RPM >=10 secs to see if it works tomorrow!

let me know how it goes.
It worked!!!! EGR finally cleared!
I don’t get to choose gear grade on my odyssey, so I followed the advice on another forum, shifted to S position. For your own safety, better find a uphill highway, when no car is around, push the accelerator pedal completely down, hold for 8-10 seconds.
I did 3-4 times then found EGR is ok!!!
It seems that for EGR to be complete, VETC needs to kick in when car reaches 5350 RPM for 2019 Honda Odyssey.
Although I strongly feel like this is not safe at all. I never drove like this my entire life…

i don't blame you. it's a minivan. most of the time i have kids in my car seat.
thanks! I am going to try it tonight.

Works like a charm. I put the car is S mode and downshift to 3rd gear using the paddles on the wheel. Kept the RPM above 5300 like you said for about 10 sec and coast for a few seconds. did that about 3 - 4 times.

EGR is finally clear. see attached blue driver scan.
i think the EGR monitoring sensor is not waking up at lower RPMs. I am starting to think there is some sort of flaw in the system that checks EGR. WhoTF VETC a minivan for 10 secs.

Oh Man. I am just seeing these updates. My wife drive the car from San Diego to Las Vegas, I believe somewhere on that drive the EGR must have got set, although my OBD kept saying not set... I took it to the dealer, who said it was already set :smh:... but EVAP was not, so they took money to drive, get all the needed sensors set and have it Smoged.... pricey but got the DMV off my back..

This thread saved me from a pricey dealer visit for sure. I did invest in a ODBII (bluedriver) scanner. I can use it on my another car as well.

I think EVAP is about ambient temperature and 3/4 gas tank + drive cycle. In my opinion, it really doesn't need to be this difficult for emission test to be ready.

??? Has anybody with a GEN5 ODY pulled the EGR valve off to verify that the exhaust chamber was carboned up to clean out the carbon. I have not done this to any vehicles after year 2000... Or that the EGR valve was plugged where it off-set the valve, to not allowing it to either open or close?
