This was very strange yesterday. Went to purchase some spark plugs on Rockauto and attempted to pay with my mastercard. Transaction would not go through. I have excellent credit score and history with this card, always pay total bill each month for like 10+ years. So I called my card’s cust service. I asked why it was denied and they said they suspected fraud because auto parts are in general are frequent fraudulent purchases. ??? I told them thats crazy and please allow my purchase to go ahead, and I was then able to complete transaction. Crazy world we are in these days.

With fraud on the rise, it is not a surprise to me. My CC company will notify me via text message about a purchase. If I approve I have to respond yes. Then I have to checkout again.

Which makes me nervous, responding via text to some automated message. Isn't that exactly what we are advised not to do?

I had to pay $1500-2000 at my mechanic a few years ago for a large series of maintenance and repairs. Credit card did not go through, I had to call them up, they saw the recent attempted transaction, and I had to authorize it before it worked.

Transaction would not go through.
Have you ordered with RockAuto previously with that card? Anything out of the ordinary is at risk of denial, I'd rather have to deal with this hassle every once in a while than find a fraudulent charge on my card at the end of the month...

if you were making the purchase via a VPN connection or browser privacy tools it will do that.

Sarbanes-Oxley know your customer nonsense.
The more data points they can connect to the transaction, the better.

ya, sounds like need to order from rock auto some more!

Once about 3 or 4 yrs ago without issue.

Sucks but really we're lucky credit card companies refuse and verify suspicious transactions.

Had it happen to me first day of vacation when I got gas and some alcohol out of state. Go figure.
This is why I always try to call my credit card companies in advance and let them know when I'll be going somewhere and where I'll be going to try and avoid issues like this. On the off chance someone catches on and commits fraud in an area close to where I am to slip through undetected, I review all my statements, so I'll notice it later.

most of it is automatic now, as soon as you use the card outside your daily use / geographical region, it will either challenge for a pin or reject the transaction.

I recall reading that cc fraud and identity theft are so rampant, that even if law enforcement were resourced and cracked down, they would only catch 1% of the thieves, and were talking millions of them globally.
It's literally out of control.

One of the many reasons on the big push for a CBDC.

I don't see CBDC fixing any of it but it certainly would add some awfully convenient tools to Big Bro literally locking people out of purchases because they are on a "naughty" list or whatever other reason they so desire...

My credit card got compromised the day before my wedding. That was inconvenient.
My credit card gets compromised daily, now that I'm married. She doesn't see a problem with it. 💸

Canadian Truckers against certain "mandates" comes to mind...

Context is key. Nothing exists in a vacuum.
If you just attempted a purchase, it was denied, and within, say, 2 minutes you get a text message from that same bank about a denied transaction, you can be reasonably sure it's legit and it's safe to respond.
If you get a text out of the blue, that's way more likely to be fraudulent. Either a fraudulent transaction was attempted, or the message itself is fraudulent.

On the flip side, I had a tire shop flub a manual-entry CC transaction TWICE inside of 5 minutes, and CC was silent the whole time. First was fat-fingering which turned 187.66 into 1876.66, second was charging me almost as much again when it should have been a refund. Over $3.5k combined. Third time they managed a proper refund, and fourth was finally the correct value. Not a peep from Discover.
