Bought my Honda Odyssey under the 3rd certification level and got the flashing CEL 30 days later. Due to a few drives out of state I was over mileage for the Honda warranty by 80 miles. Did all the research on this forum prior to my appointment with Honda.
Honda service first quote was $4500 for a change in piston rings. Now I had bought an extended warranty through Zurich which allegedly covered all the internal parts of the engine. Honda said that this warranty may or may not cover, and it wouldn't be known until the engine was torn down to get to the rings. I argued a bit and told them how ridiculous it was to sell me this warranty only to be held hostage for it. I also let them know I was very familiar with this issue. Fast forward a week and they come back with a 3000 quote. To which I said no and I went back to talk with my sales person. I asked about buy back and I talked about cancelling my service contract. A few days later he called back to say that sales would cover 50% of the 3k and I could get it done for 1500. I still said no. By this time I had enough information to reasonably assume the van was traded in for this issue, just not enough to prove. I told service I wanted my free oil change and then wanted the van back. They obliged and waived the diagnostic fee.
Took the van home after it sat in their lot for 4 weeks. Changed the spark plugs and installed the Svcm. Put in the techron and took it to the interstate. No eco light, and 26 mpg on highway.
