As a bonus to upgrade my carplay. I replaced the front and back door speakers. WOW…… WHAT A DIFFERENCE IN SOUND. The factory door speakers are weak. Also i switched out my outdoor window trim because it was brittle.

Awesome job! I just ordered my AliExpress unit. You and this thread make it seem possible as a DIY so I’ll try. Lol. Can you share the link for the speakers and trim? Also, mine is a 2014 with 180k miles and there are understandably some creaks and rattles. Did you find the window trim helped with any of this, if you had it? I just got my 2014 (it’s my 5th Ody) and even though she has miles she looks AMAZING. Just want to tighten her up.

Bought the one linked above from AliExpress and installed it. So far so good! The installation is intimidating at first but not actually too hard. It helps to watch a video on how to take the Odyssey radio out. Also their customer support was able to answer several questions. I'm using Android Audio.

Mine worked fine for about 4-5 months. Now it's glitchy. Wireless Carplay still works, but when switching to the factory screen (for cameras and info) it's now just blank. It was intermittent but now it completely quit. So I'm certain it's the unit. It supposedly has a 12 month warranty. I've contacted the seller and we'll see how that goes.

Yikes, that's not good. Let us know how it goes

Hello @FamilyMinivan and @2016HondaOdyssey
Can either of post a video of how this AliExpress unit works please? Looking to install one for my 2016 EXL.

1. Will both android and iPhone connect wirelessly and automatically? How does one switch phones?
2. I assume it just mirrors your phone apps right? And not a standalone device (with internet from phone hotspot)?
3. How do you contact their customer service?
4. Has it lasted through heat and cold?
1. Yes it can connect wireless with both carplay and android auto. I do not have apple products so I have not tested how it would switch between carplay and aa phones but I do know if you have multiple phones setup for aa then it will try to connect to the phones in the order they are listed. Since our van is my wife's daily driver her phone is listed in the #1 slot so she always connects if we are both in the vehicle. I believe if you had a both carplay and aa setup it would connect and run whatever phone is on the #1 slot and of you were both in the car and wanted to connect to #2 you would probably have to switch off bluetooth and wifi on the #1 phone before starting the vehicle in order to connect to #2 that would be my guess. You might also be able to go into the box settings and switch it manually to phone #2 but I have never tried this.

2. The unit runs carplay or aa software locally on the device, so it is not exactly screen mirroring per say but yes you must have a phone connected to it in order to use carplay or aa since the phone does most of the processing, this is the same on pretty much any stock carplay or aa vehicles. There also is a screen mirroring option seperate in the unit but we never use it so I cannot speak to how well that works.

3. Contact customer service to your seller thru the message center option in aliexpress basically it is an internal email service.

4. We are in texas so I can only speak to heat not cold but 1 year later it is running good just the same as the day I installed it.

I just installed this unit from AliExpress and I reached out to the seller about getting the lane watch camera updated. It sounds like that has been successful for several of you.

I don't know if I did something wrong in the installation, but it won't connect wirelessly.. only through a USB cable on the aux setting. What am I missing to set that up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
In the box settings menu you must enable/select wireless connection and then pair your phone via BT to the box so it shows in the list of devices paired to the box. Also you must have Bluetooth and wifi turned on in you phone in order for the unit to automatically connect.

I have the same car as yours, I didn't install the MIC cable, I don't think it is supported. Everything else works just fine.
The optional mic cable should not affect the audio output (mic only if you have problems with the unit recognizing voice commands). Make sure you have the honda radio input set to AUX IN if you are running android or set to BT if you are running carplay and the stock radio volume at normal listening volume. Also in the box settings menu there are options to set the box volume output which I set to maximum volume and then do all listening volume adjustments using the honda stock radio volume dial.

Also if you are using an iPhone it has phone settings for diverting media or phone calls using the carplay app so you would want to check and adjust these settings to work for your setup.

I used the external carplay device before in my 2014 EX-L and now have the Carplay kit installed internally and couldn't be happier.

I think the 2011-2017 dashboard is not ideal for installing another screen. The upper screen is at a pretty high position, and adding another screen on top of it will partially block our frontview. Alternatively, installing it sideway will also partially block the upper screen when we need it (backup or lanewatch camera).

Maybe I just could not find a good way to place it anywhere.

That also doesn't mention I had to use two cables, one for power and one to audio (AUX), and the audio via AUX is simply no good with so much static noise.
The external options are certainly a viable option for those who prefer them.

In my opinion I agree with One2Three, I also tried an external unit first and did not like it because there was no good place to mount it on the ody dashboard without blocking windshield, or having to take eyes off the road to look down to see it, or partially blocking the reverse and lanewatch camera screen.

The best place I found to mount the external device was to the left of the driver steering wheel but then it vibrated when driving, the aux plug for audio also created static hum in our speakers, and we still had to look at a perfectly good and well positioned but useless stock honda screen just sitting there in the dash while driving so I went on the hunt for a better solution.

2. Per the audio static yes I also had this problem and it annoyed me very much. These are the options I uncovered to solve it or improve it-

a. If you run apple carplay then this is the easiest fix I believe you can set the phone and carplay up to divert the audio to the stock honda bluetooth and the carplay video data is sent to the unit separately which solves all static. Unfortunatley if you run android this is not an option google provides at this time.

b. What I did to improve it was insert additional wires into all the ground pins on the large wireharness that connects at the aliexpress box. I used a multimeter to detect all of the ground pins for the unit and speakers in this harness and then inserted wires onto each and ran them all to a common grounding position on the frame that runs around the radio and glovebox area. When testing my solution with each additional ground wire I attached there was a reduction in the volume of the static. Once I connected all of them it is quite acceptable to me now. If I turn the radio volume up to 30 or higher with no music then yes I can still hear a some static but if the volume is in our normal listening range of 15 to 25 the static noise is no longer detectable even when no music is playing so I am satisfied enough now. It has been a while but I believe all of the wires in the harness were black that I grounded to the same connection point to minimize the ground loop interference in my van. This solution is free but it takes some motivation to accomplish.

c. The simplest solution I have found but it costs additional $ for solving aa static noise is to buy the AAwireless dongle (must be this specific brand) and connect it to the box usb, set the box connection to usb connection only, setup the AAwirelss app and connections on your phone, connect your phone to the stock honda bluetooth. The AAwireless device comes with an app for your phone that allows you to 'disable audio sink'. This will seperate and route your audio for AA directly to the honda bluetooth and bypass the box entirely taking the aux connection out of use (basically it replicates the feature that Apple carplay provides for BT connection that sadly google does not offer). You will bypass the aux connection and static as your phone will be running sound through the stock bluetooth. This is the easiest way I have found but will cost additional money, maybe if you monitor amazon around black friday coming up you might be able to score one for around $55 if you are lucky but generally i think they sell around $75.

d. There may be some other options like inserting a ground loop isolator if your box uses an actual aux cable with 1/8" jack instead of individual speak wire connections or maybe some kind of option using a dac usb converter but I did not explore these options other than becoming aware they could be something to investigate.

The static is caused by a ground loop in your honda. This is common issue in the odyssey affecting the aux connection with any device that is simultaneously charging or powered by the vehicle. This is where the grom provides a better option with the ipod connection instead of aux direct out of the box to bypass the common ground loop interference in the odysseys.

I've been Trying to decide between the Grom Vline2 or the Naviks units. I'm just now finding this AliExpress version.
If the AliE unit does not do wireless Android Auto, it's an immediate pass for me.

From my understanding the Grom VL2 has it's own operating system running android and can run it's own applications without a phone connected. While the Naviks and the AliExpress require a connected phone to make use of the features.
Does anyone know what happens to the Naviks or AliE unit when there's no phone connected?

It seems the Grom routes its connection including audio through the ipod port while the Naviks and AliE options use the AUX or you connect to the car with Bluetooth. Anyone else have issues with the AUX buzzing?

From the looks of it, the Naviks and AliE seem to be pretty close to identical, So I have some questions.

Does the AliE version require any external microphone or other additional hardware?

Is the USB port still functional?

When an incoming call or notification comes through, does it swap the screen to Honda or does Android Auto handle it?

I saw mention of having double Bluetooth connections I'm assuming one for Audio to the vehicle, and one for Android Auto/Carplay. If the update makes it connect with Wifi, can I still hotspot my phone? I have a google chromecast connected for my RES and I hotspot my phone to the device.
In my opinion I do think that the grom is likely a better product than the aliexpress unit so if price is not a significant differentiator for you then the grom is better for AA because it has the ipod connection so you are guaranteed no buzzing or static noise issues, it also has an hdmi connection if you have a phone that supports that and you desire that feature.

For me I just wanted to get waze and google maps displayed on the stock screen for my wife because that screen is in a good position and works with polarized sunglasses. I did not want to lose the stock backup and blindside cameras. I did not want to invest alot of money into modernizing an older used vehicle and I think if i remember correctly the grom was around $659 at the time I was looking, maybe could have monitored and got a discount down to $550 but that was way more than I wanted to spend just to get maps on the nav screen.

That is when I found the aliexpress option from all the acura guys and after researching what I could I decided it was worth the risk that I could make it work on the odyssey. I have found all sorts of great info on this forum to help me maintain and repair my van so when I couldn't find much good information about this topic on the forum I decided to give back to the community by providing what I learned from my experience in hopes it might help others who want to modernize thier odyssey for the lowest possible price point.

To your specific questions-

If you do not have a phone connected then you will have the honda stock screen and functions. You would also have some Linux based software running on the box that supports any aftermarket cameras added to the vehicle and a usb music player that would function without a phone connected. AA and carplay require a phone to be connected for computing, data, GPS etc, this is true for all AA and carplay units this is inherent to the application.

From what I could tell Naviks and AliE are basically the same units. I found alot of unhappy Naviks and Navtool reviews about customer service and delivery on other forums for other model vehicles so when I found the AliE option that appeared to be basically the same unit and was cheaper I decided to cut out the middleman.

AliE requires no additional hardware, it is all plug and play

Yes the dash USB still works as normal for playing music files or charging a USB device however if you switch the radio to usb input then you will not hear any directions, phone calls, or media sent thru the aux connection if you are running AA. Carplay might be ok for phone calls since it runs thru the BT I am not sure. The dash USB will not connected to the carplay box after installation so if you want to use that dash USB as a wired connection for your phone to be connected for wired carplay or wired AA transmission after installation then you would need to buy an additional USB harness that creates a specific Y split and connect it to the wire harness and to your dash usb behind the trim. You can buy this harness from Naviks, Navtool, Grom, and probably other sellers if you really wanted this functionality.

The phone call handling will depend how you set it up. For carplay I have heard it works great thru the honda BT and maintains all steering wheel controls. Unfortunately google does not allow for this functionality with AA so I found what worked best for me was to only connect to the AliE box and handle all calls thru AA. I deleted the connection to the honda bluetooth due to echo and weird call handling simultaneously. I do think the honda bluetooth had better call sound quality than the AliE provides with AA but it is usable. I found the AAwireless dongle for a discounted price at $59 so I am going to test it by using the device app to divert all audio from the phone directly to honda bluetooth and eliminate the aux connection for AA by 'disabling audio sink' which is a feature available in this dongle, if you are interested in this option refer to a different reply in this thread where I detailed more information about this as an option.

I have not tried to Hotspot concurrently with a chromecast, I would suspect it is not possible while running AA for a variety of reasons including that AA using the casting protocol when running AA and also when AA is running google restricts the use of many apps on your phone in the name of safety so it is inherent in the AA program regardless of your hardware. To be clear, I do not know the answer to chromecast and AA simultaneously to be able to answer your question definitively.

The only way I found that I could use AA without restrictions was to to purchase the Headunit Reloaded app and use it on a seperate tablet as your display. I was intrigued by this option because of the additional functionality the developer provides amd the ability to run restriction free but in the end I could not find a tablet that would run without a battery connected and leaving a tablet with a battery installed permanently in the car here in the Texas heat was a no go so I suspended my research into this option and went for the AliE limcet box and I am satisfied with its performance vs. it's price point.

I replied later in this thread on some options I discovered for managing the buzzing or static noise when using Android in case that affects you or others.

So I got everything installed. I installed the device in the glove compartment for now, and will probably mount inside the dash later, as others have done. For the most part everything works OK, at least for right now. Spotify and Audible seem to work pretty good, screen display is working for all the apps and looks sharp!

My issues are mic/speaker related. Early today I was able to have carplay read a text back to me (sounded like sh*t but I understood it), and I was able to send a test text via voice. However I can't seem to get that working now. Waze doesn't take voice commands, and doesn't send alert/directions via audio. I can't send texts via mic either. Could it be setting in the Sinairyu device? Also unable to get screen mirroring working in the Sinairyu app, granted thats not super important but it would be nice.

At first the lane watch camera didn't work. I contacted Sinairyu via WhatsApp and they sent me a update via a zip file. I installed and now I have the lanewatch camera working. They are responsive, but you can tell there is a langauge barrier, which is understandable.

Before the update file was installed I was "double" bluetooth connected. Now I connect to Handsfree on bluetooth and Limcet Box_8a61 on wifi. However under the carplay setting on the iPhone it shows Limcet Box. Not sure if there is something up with connection configuration.

I'm hoping someone who has had this installed longer can chime in with some pointers. Also hoping this will help someone else in the future. This thread and forum have been super helpful.
I dont have your exact brand of box but I think they are basically all the same.

There is a setting in the box for oem or external mic. You can toggle this setting to see if it works better in the opposite state.

I found out the hard way that the oem mic only works and hears from the drivers seat. It will not pick up your commands from the passenger seat if you are sitting in that seat troubleshooting during install like I was. It is a directional mic probably to prevent passengers or loud children from affecting your voice inputs. So make sure you are sending your voice commands from the drivers seat.

I do not use the carplay to be able to confirm but I think your iphone should connect to the to the honda via BT and to the box via Wifi for carplay. There may be some settings in your phone or carplay you need to set to make sure all audio and calls is routed thru the BT and carplay video data is routed thru the wifi I am not sure about this.

If your mic still does not work, I did route the additional mic wire from the box to the oem mic in the overhead console. This should not be necessary but I did it before I realized while installing and troubleshooting from the passenger seat why it would never acknowledge my voice inputs because it is a directional mic and i assumed something was wrong with my installation. I just left my mic wire connected anyway after I figured out this was the problem and it also works great recognizing my voice commands setup, I do not think this additional wire routing is necessary on the 4th gen odys but in case you try everything else and still have problems with voice commands it is another option you could try.

For your double connections after software update, if they are a problem I would delete all connections to honda and delete all connections in the box settings and then delete/forget all those wifi and bt connections on the iphone. Then I would start clean and reconnect phone to the honda bt and reconnect the phone to the carplay box.

Do any of these systems allow you to use the Android Auto or Car Play while playing sound from the RES?

I'd really like to use the GPS on trips, but want my kids to be able to watch a movie in the back using the speakers for sound. I realize I can do headphones, but having the speakers is nice.
I do not have factory RES but yes you can have the AA or carplay running in on the dash while the kids listen to the RES sound on the speakers. But you will not hear audio gps directions unless your van has the capability to seperate and play factory RES only on the rear speakers while allowing the driver to hear the radio playing thier own different music out of the front door speakers, if your van can do this then you could have audio directions in the front while the kids listen to the RES in back.

I do have an aftermarket res and the kids can listen to the sound thru all car speakers while I use AA nav (video only). I don't use audio nav anyway cause it interrupts way too often so since I only use the visual maps and directions it works well for me.

Thanks for posting this. I bought the same item and am installing it now. I was worried about buying from AliExpress, but it appears to be a good product. The instructions were somewhat messed up -but the customer service has been outstanding. I've been chatting with them via WhatsApp and they've been very responsive.

-I had the same buzzing sound from the AUX cord. It was fixed by connecting through Bluetooth instead. You can go into the devices' system settings and change how it connects. You might also be able to fix this with a ground loop isolator for about $10.
-To get the Lanewatch camera to work, I had to update the firmware through the USB. Customer service sent me a zip link for this. I also had to turn the 'right camera' setting OFF.
-The Lanewatch camera switches on with the turn signal -But the Lanewatch button (at the tip of the turn signal arm) dims the screen.
-the instructions say a cord should be connected to the car's BT (black box to the right of the stereo), but it's supposed to connect to the car's microphone (behind the rearview mirror). However, the microphone worked without installing this cord. It seems to work the same connection; so I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.

From reading other posts, more expensive devices have the same Lanewatch button issue. Overall, I think this product is an excellent deal. If they had better instructions and links to videos and updates; installation would've been much easier.
I agree with all this information shared by brokenpaddle, good post

So I'm about half way through my install and of course I ran out of daylight. Can you guys tell me where you mounted the unit? Pictures if you got em? Behind the glovebox seems logical but I'm not finding any surfaces to mount it to, I'll revist in the morning.

As for the lanewatch/creeper camera. I have the unit installed everything seems to work just fine except this camera. Is it working for you guys? I'm gonna contact the seller on Ali Express right meow.

Thanks for the help!
I strapped mine to the metal frame above the glove compartment on the left side so that I can access it if necessary by just dropping out the glovebox with no tools required.

Lanewatch camera you need the supplier to send you a firmware update and install via usb
