I just found out that there is a spot on my roof where my 2012 Odyssey started to peel off. Upon reading online, I learned that Honda issued a 7 year warranty extension from the original date of purchase. Unfortunately, I am outside the warranty extension. I do plan on owning the van for a few more years so my resolve is to rectify it. Do you guys think Honda will give some consideration on getting the roof repainted? Is there a general rule of thumb when trying to communicate with them? Do I go through my local dealership, or can I go directly with the headquarters?

It's not a recall. Recalls are for safety issues exclusively. This is a warranty extension.

You can certainly try asking them for any goodwill, but no guarantee that you'd get anything.

Depends a lot on the relationship you have with your friendly neighbourhood Honda dealership.

If you haven't been there since you bought the van because you reflexively call them "stealerships", don't get your hopes up - they have no motivation to try to keep your non-existent business. On the other hand, if you go in for service even semi-regularly and/or have a pattern of buying supplies and parts from them for the stuff you DIY, the dealer might be inclined to go to bat for you.

Cases like these are also why sometimes it can be a good idea to purchase HondaCare from a local dealer rather than one of the numerous online dealers. Dealers also know the cheaper online dealers exist, so if you know that and still choose to buy from them, that can also help in this situation.

The option of a cheaper online dealer doesn't even exist in Canada. All Honda Plus plans (which is what Honda Care is called in the Great White North) must be purchased locally which incentivizes owners to return to their original (or at least local) dealership.

I agree with you that the bottom line remains the same - dealers won't be inclined to play ball with you if you won't play ball with them.

I have a 2014 oddy and started to have a paint failure around the sunroof about 4 months ago. Took it to the dealer and opened a claim with Honda and they denied my claim. I had it painted by a local painter before bigger issues started to occur. Hope you have better luck with Honda.

Having this issue now with my 15 pilot paint color looks awful and chunks of paint have started peeling off where my windshield meets the roof and Honda 800 line said they won’t cover it it was 7 years from the original purchase date.. so fustrating as they knew this was an issue

I have a 2013 Honda Pilot and my paint has been flaking off for years! At this point my entire roof needs to be repainted, as well as, each side of the vehicle in numerous places.

I did have my vehicle repainted over the windshield in 2019.
I know of at least two other local Honda Pilot owners and a Honda Odyssey owner with the same issue. We all have the Pearl White paint.

This should NOT be the first thing to go in a Honda!

That's what's frustrating to me. Unlike a recall, I received no notice about this. It wasn't until last summer, while visiting family, that I saw the huge area of missing paint from a second story bedroom window. Same exact paint color and location as everyone else. At least now I have my answer.

One day I noticed huge chunks of paint coming off the tailgate of my 2014 Honds Odused. This was 2021. I was never contacted about the extended warranty and Honda sure gave me a runaround. Said my vin wasn’t included…..the drivers side panel has my paint as NH 603-P, which was the paint number. Honda paid for half of the repairs. Now I have paint peeling above the sliding doors. The car is 10 years old but it’s the same issue just in a different spot. Wish me luck.
