I drive a 2013 Odyssey EXL with 125k miles. We went out to the Hilton Head on vacation last week, and I have the infamous traction control and service engine soon lights on solid. I took the vehicle to the Honda dealer (not knowing anything about the issues with the ECO extended Honda warranty). The code set was P0304, which they told me my car would need to have new rings installed on cylinder 4 ($2600). Luckily for me the dealer could not get the install done in a timely manner so we opted for just new spark plugs ($300). The mechanic said this should get us home, but we would need to get the rings rebuilt ASAP. The dealer also said we would need to pay for this out of pocket, since our Honda has a "rebuilt" title. So, I started looking on Odyclub and man there is a ton of great info about this notorious issue with the VCM. I ordered the VCM Tuner II and installed it immediately when I returned home. I could tell a HUGE improvement to the van's performance.
I have a few questions...
1). How did the dealer know my rings were bad by simply looking at the plugs? The plugs were original and definitely needed replaced, but how could he tell the plugs didn't cause the P0304 code?
2). The van runs great, and it's not using any oil. Should I get a second opinion and get new piston rings or just ignore the dealer's advice?
I'm very thankful to all the invaluable information on this forum! You all saved me lots of cash, and potentially saved my engine as well!
