Heaven forbid people start driving the speed limit, paying attention to the guy in front of them, and leaving plenty of room incase an emergency stop is needed.

I'm with you - me personally, I like the idea of having ABS, but I don't drive badly enough to ever need it.
With the recent below temps we've had and Mayor Daley cutting back on plowing and salting the side streets, we have miles upon miles of frozen skidpads currently. Even the most cautious and conservative drivers will lock up some of the wheels at times on these roads. Today I had people pull out of their parking spaces with poor judgement and the ABS was invoked helping me to stop in time. I saw several SUV's slowing at a 4 way stop with their ABS cycling on and off. It is really a mess out here....

My old boss had a abs light on in his truck. He just ignored it like some of you and one day driving down the highway going 65mph his brakes locked up and he skided to the side of the rode. Luckly no accident or no one hurt.

right ,well i blead the abs cleaned the wheele sensors ,topped up the fluid reset the abs light and................all went well no light for 3 days THEN just as i said to my wife "ive FIXED it" the sodding light came on again .so ill start by re bleeding it and see what happens and will post any progress!!!!

i have done that (a check of my other posts would show a tad of mech knolwage) . got code 1 8 that means high preasure system hence i started by bleading the hp system (the sensors got done as i was replaceing the front pads at the time ) easeiest thing first i thought and as it worked for days before i got the light again i think im on the right track !!!
oh yeah and i think that we had the first flight as well, before the wright bros http://www.destination.co.nz/temuka/pearse.asp i see by your avatar you like early planes

the light on our van was caused (from the codes) by the rear left sensor - probably because it was covered in crud. I removed that and haven't put it back in (lazy and hey! the brakes work anyway) so I was sure that was the cause of the ABS light. But lately the light hasn't been coming on as soon; usually it's a good minute or so before it would click on. Yesterday I noticed that the ABS tank is almost to the "Min" marking - could this be the reason that the light is now "slow" to activate?

I hope to replace the magnet in the sensor next week and I'll try adding some fluid and see what happens.

oh and Merry Christmas (for those who celebrate it)

1995 Honda Odyssey - 214,000 miles

The ABS light comes on sometimes. Sometimes the system buzzes and the light comes on, other times the system buzzes and the light stays off. Checking the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) says that it is the accumulator.

I have bled the ABS system and reset the ABS computer. There is no leaking anywhere.

When I research this, I find that this can be a problem with the accumulator or with the whole ABS modulator assembly. I don't want to spend $300 or so on an accumulator, only to find that the whole modulator assembly needs to be replaced (the modulator assy includes the accumulator and costs about $1,000). I can buy a complete used modulator assy for about $100 plus shipping, but all of the used modulators I'm finding have at least 100,000 miles on them already.

Does anyone with experience in this area have some advice for me? Should I replace just the accumulator? Or should I replace the whole modulator assembly with a used part?

With the number of miles on this vehicle, I'm not looking to invest a lot of money into it.

Thanks for any words of wisdom you can provide.

Juan

hi
i had a similar issue with the van i had ,i replaced the modulator with a used one but was still no good also tried replacing the accumulator to no avail. in the end i gave up and removed the ABS compleatly including all the sensors and control box, if you want/need to have it then its worth trying to get a used unit but the lower the mileage the better id try replaceing the accumulator first as its easier .good luck

I have a 1996 Ody with 185k miles. I purchased it with 68k back in 2004'ish. Within a few thousand miles the ABS light would come on and the BUZZ sound would happen. I took it to our Honda dealer and the service manager came out and looked at it, told me THEY used those vans for loaners because they were such good quality and reliable - ALSO said the ABS problem is known about but the system is unnecessary on that small a van. Told me I'd never miss it.

7 years later he is right. Drove the van 115k and never missed the ABS. Also have an occasional "SRS" [yellow] light on dash that doesn't bother me. Just means my airbag may not deploy. I'm OK with that also.

I might look around for a way to remove both those system myself. This is a 4cyl Honda super utility/travel compact van. It just needs to be driven. I wouldn't unhook the light necessarily, but I'm under the strong belief this 1st gen van has no need for ABS. Ours has always performed well in all types of weather, full or empty.

the abs is not hard to remove what you need to do is find another van the same model without abs and get the proportioning valve that all the brake pipes go into and the piping then swap it all over ,also remove the wheel sensors and control box ,the biggest job is bleeding the breaks after .a good tip is to take photos of the new valve while still in the donor van and note which pipe goes to what wheel/master cylinder

@brenthenson - Good info! Of course, sounds like too much trouble in my case. This van has become my work vehicle, so I can live with the ABS light. Heck, I'd hate for the SRS light to get lonely! ;) My only decision at this point is whether to tackle that annoying oil leak on the 'passenger' side of the motor. Plan on replacing the distributor o-rings and if that doesn't get it all - I'll assume a 'main seal' [between tranny & engine] and leave it alone. Sure I can get 300k out of it even with that leak. :)

@brenthenson - Yes, I just found the your thread on that. Looks like you did it twice, or were contemplating it a few years ago. Still, mine is by NO means 'pouring' out, so I'll be verifying leak source and quantity after the new year then probably let it roll. Got a 1998 Accord EX that needs front axle and timing belt, which looks to be my "DIY winter project". I've got all these perfectly maintained Hondas starting to add up, because they are in too good of shape to sell. That 'main seal' actually does look kinda fun. Maybe next winter. :)
