Looks like a great option, but I'm concerned that the IC chip or transistor that provides the logic signal may not be able to handle 150mA continuous current.

IIRC, ~150ma for the big ones like this:

screw it down to the console unit, or wire tie it under a seat via the mounting flange....

As I suspected, the logic signal doesn't have enough current to trip an automotive style relay. I may have found a solution that doesn't involve swapping parts or custom electronics. On one side of the modulator case is a small patch of plastic film measuring about 0.5 square inches. Behind this, on the printed circuit board, is a switch with the letters H,M,L at each of three switch positions. Mine was set to L. I'm betting that this is, in fact, a gain control switch and that by moving it to either H or M you will solve the level control problem. You can access the switch either by cutting/peeling the film or removing 3 screws.

Let me know if it works.

Just took apart the dash and took out the radio. Dug out the FM modulator and turned it up to H. Tested it. MUCH BETTER. Still could be a little louder to be up to the level of the radio - but still a very noticable improvement!

Thanks Mike!!!

PS: There were a bunch of dip switches in the other side of the unit - any idea what they set/do?

Glad to hear it's made an improvement, Nick. Although it's not's quite up to the same level as the radio, can you live with it?

The DIP switches control modulator frequency, in case the factory setting was experiencing interference from say, a strong local radio station.

Yes - I can live with it. We drove over an hour tonight in a total downpour on the highway and the kids didn't complain about not hearing it.

I did have it turned all the way up though.

Obviously - built in RES is the way to go but this was a great $350 solution and the screen is pretty amazing. Would definately recommend it to anyone in the same boat as us and would never consider an "under seat" option for anything but a subwoofer.
