I want to add a DVD player and screen (10" or Bigger) to my EX-L. I went to get one installed but when they told me it would have to hang from the head liner I backed out of the deal. Has anyone had a DVD player installed in their '09 EX-L? What is your opinion of having a heavy DVD player and monitor hanging from the headliner?

There are only a few places you can actually put a DVD entertainment system.

1. Ceiling - This is the most practical as anyone in the 2nd and 3rd row would be able to watch it.
2. Headrests - Depending on the # of people viewing you may need to buy multiples.
3. In the head unit - Replacing the Stereo unit with a unit that has a display and dvd player will really only allow the people in the 1st row to see what's being played.

I installed my entertainment system in the ceiling and the kids love it (Especially when they didn't budge during a 6hr road trip).

Good luck with your decision.

Find another installer, and do a search here. Many people have installed aftermarket DVD players in their Odys, and there are pics of the hole they cut along with the available crossmember attached to the roof. There is a cross member at the correct location that you can use for the install. It does not have to hang from the headliner!

Honda calls the system RES (aka Rear Entertainment System). Hence folks call it RES too.

Like others have posted, there are multiple install instructions. All 05 - 09 vans' roof is the same so all those install instructions apply to you too. Here is the search term and first thread to start you out but IIRC there are at least three different install instrcutions including one from a guy with a Audivox 10.2" screen.

Search term: RES and install

Mounted to the van, not the headliner. I got a great deal on 2 Alpine units a while back-installed one, sold the other. I had it installed locally by an Alpine dealer who was used to working with the model for $150.00. Famman on here has the same unit and some great pictures installed. you can search of PKG-RSE2.
You can find the units for about $550 on ebay often. The picture is awesome, the sound quality is great. has some neat buttons on the front of the player where an adult can easily control the unit from the front seat. Has a bunch of stuff in the setup menu for Auto play, auto dimming, etc. Alpine makes top of the line stuff.
