I couldn't find Mobil 1 5W-20 at walmart either but they did have it Castrol Syntec so I went with that.

I got this stuff from WalMart (they didn't have 5W-20)... bottle said it works in Honda, but local dealer was doing the oil change refused to put it in saying 0W-20 was like having no oil at all.

Since I was under warranty, I told them put whatever they want in it. However, now I'm out of warranty and wonder is there any reason not to use the 0W-20 oil?
Well, here's what I understand:
1) The Mobil1 0w-20 is a PAO, Group IV, based synthetic.
2) The Mobil1 5w-20 is a Group III, not "truly a synthetic"

The "0w" basically means it will flow better at cold temps. The "20" in "0w-20" and "5w-20" means that both oils should be in the same viscosity range when at operating temperature.

That being said, the person who told you having 0w-20 is like having no oil in the car, or something to that effect, shouldn't be working in the service department of that dealership. He/she should be moved to paper shuffling or mopping the floor.

You should be okay with 0w-20. I'm running it right now.

Do you have any evidence about that?

I think it's PAO based too.

PAO oils have a very low pouring point while group III ones don't.

It was...but people started noticing drops in M1 performance from UOA's. Several people emailed Mobil1 and nobody got a clear answer. So it sure seems like they're not doing PAO anymore. Been discussed a lot on BITOG, lots to read up on :) Either way, whether it is PAO or GpIII, the poor UOA performance tells me to use something cheaper.

Haven't logged into the site in a long time.

Anyway, I read it at BITOG a year or 2 ago, based on the UOA's results people were seeing. Tried to find it but their search function really stinks so I was unable to find it. Sorry.

So the best I can say for now is look through BITOG. If I come across it I'll be sure to post the link..

Alright with me too...I saw the bottle at WalMart the first thing I saw was the pretty green cap!!! ...lol...And then read the label saw that it improves MPG and is syntetic and I was SOLD! Been using it on my ODY since my 2nd oil and my TSX and HIghlander since the 1st oil change. Love it...plus at $22 for 5qts more in love (got a few bottles)...cheaper than 5w30 which is $6 more.

May I ask a dumb question? (following the dumb question question which is silly to ask in the first place)

What's the noticeable benefit of going to a different oil than the recommended one (such as 0W-20 over 5W-20)?

The answer I want to hear is not about how it flows in temps, what the difference in composition is, what its potential "protection potential" is or how it tastes on mashed potatoes. What I want to know is what you, as a driver, are going to REALLY see/feel/notice about the van day-to-day that will justify both this debate and potential price differences?

I think I'm with dagmando on this one...I'd just like to know what makes the rest of you sleep that much better at night, considering most of us probably won't have these things in 10 or 15 years.

Nothing.

Unless you're talking about an extreme swing....say chosing a straight 40W over 5W...you might see a small mpg difference. Some folks with problem engines can get some results by going to a heavier oil, but that's after the engine is long gone. Otherwise it just comes down to protection of the engine...usually at start-up.

That's what I thought, but I appreciate the confirmation :D

0W20 will flow better when cold than 5W20. Is you do short trips, oil never heats up, so a 0W20 will flow better than 5W20. Result : you'll get a better fuel enconomy and that's why Mobil labels it so.

I work at 2.5 km from home so most of the time, my oil is never hot.

As examples, if you have a bad gasket or some type of mechanical issue, ie. valve train noise, going to a different weight oil may stop the oil leak and eliminate the valve train noise. Is that justification, it depends on the person.

Mobil1 claims up to 2% in improved gas mileage, for what it's worth by using 0w20 depending on a lot of factors and when compared to commonly used viscosity oils (which is the key thing as they're not specific). So, you may not see a difference in your wallet.

However, you're probably getting a better oil for the same price, so why not? It's almost like saying would you rather eat Prime grade Filet Mignon or Grade A Filet Mignon if the price was the same. I'd rather eat the Prime grade...

Wasen't able to find any 5 qts 0W20 in any WM I went along I95 in Maine this spring... :-(
Autozone has a sale right now. 5 quarts of Mobil1 and a Mobil1 oil filter for $30.

If you signed up at Mobil1 earlier this year you might be able to get a $10 rebate. So, $20 for 5 quarts of Mobil1 0w20 and an oil filter. Not bad by my book..
