Hi All,

I hope, i can get some advice here.

My wife lost the honda odyssey LX 2011 master key.
I have one key that i use it everyday.

I have called a dealer near to my home and he is asking $75(key) + $90(Program) = $165
Also called a dealer with whom i purchase this used vehicle which is far away. He is asking for $140

This is too much.

Any idea, how can i get a key with much lesser price? I am fine with the vallet key, if it is for lesser cost.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

That is about the ballpark price. The killer is that programming charge because you cannot program the key to your Van without the Honda HDS tool or a similar locksmith version of the tool, so they all charge about an hour labor to do that. You can buy the key itself cheaper but you still have to pay someone to do the programming.

Thanks. Any idea, any reliable place where can i get the key online for cheap.

I went to Walmart, i see that there is a key maker machine , i select honda odyssey, but the keys are available till 2010 for honda odyssey. The charge is only $1.20. Even though it may be a simple vallet key, Here i pay $150 for the year 2011.

It's very likely the Walmart key will only lock and unlock the car via the door keyhole, but it won't start the car as it does not have the RF transponder, that is why the programming as explained above. Check on eBay, here is an example. Make sure it has the transponder.

Exactly right. I expect that one will work fine. I went through all this when I bought my 2011 LX with only one master key. The non-remote keys like the one there on ebay can be had for $10 or less on ebay. The 3-button remote keys go for around $25 (either non-genuine but new or genuine Honda but used, with a new blank). Either way, you'll need the dealer or a very rare independent locksmith (which may cost more) to program the immobilizer.

To do that they need to have the car and all other keys during the programming process, so you cannot do that online.

You can program the remote yourself with instructions online (I did not have to do this myself, but I can confirm that it is separate from the immobilizer programming).

One of my local dealers was going to charge bank for each key, etc. After asking my neighbor, who is a locksmith, he referred me to an independent locksmith who could do it for a little less, but still a lot. Then I checked my other local dealer (Honda Redwood City = Awesome, by the way) and they charged:
$25 for a non-remote key, including cutting the blank (this is not a "valet" key, BTW)
$75 for a 3-button remote key, including cutting
$65 for programming (both the immobilizer and the remote, which are different procedures) - FOR AS MANY KEYS AS I WANTED
$10 cutting charge per key for any ebay keys I would bring in - they of course could not guarantee those

The Honda system allows up to 6 keys total, with up to 3 of them being remote keys. Since these prices seemed low, and I expect to have the car for a very long time, I decided to get 2 new remote keys and 3 new non-remote keys (none of them valet keys).

I bought 2 remote keys (new, non-genuine) on ebay for $25 each. Then took the car in to have it done, and bought 3 genuine non-remote keys from them. They did not charge the 2 x $10 cutting fee for the 2 keys I brought in, and with a 15% coupon, I drove out of there with 5 keys for about $125 (plus the $50 I had spent on ebay blanks).

So I'd recommend looking for a more competitive dealer, and it could be that they'll also give you a deal on programming multiple keys at the same time. The ebay blanks should be fine - the dealer said that when cutting the two I brought in, it was a little tougher, so maybe the metal alloy is a little different than Genuine Honda, but they got it done and they work fine.

Also, regarding the Walmart $1.20, I doubt that is even possible as a door-only key for 2011+ with the "laser cut" key style. Those require a milling-machine type of a cut, and the equipment is far more expensive than that for cutting traditional keys (per my locksmith friend).

Thanks to all.

I went to the Honda Dealer in Northern New Jersey. He is asking for $66 for the key and $65 for the Programming.

In Ebay, I have found a link in ebay for Honda Odyssey 2011 LX Key...approx $48 for 2 keys (3 button keys)
2 New Uncut Honda Key Keyless Entry Remote Transmitter Fob Replacement | eBay

2 New Honda Civic LX Odyssey Van Sedan Uncut Keyless Entry Key Remote Fob Pair | eBay

In both the above links, the seller has not mentioned Transponder chip but mentioned as Transmitter FOB. If i buy the key from any of the above sellers, will the key work.

I am looking for 3 button key for my Honda Odyssey 2011 LX. Kindly advise, if the above links are good enough.

Thanks.

That first ebay link, from keylessking, is exactly what I bought for my 2011 LX. I paid $3 more for mine, but assume it's the same part since it's from the same seller. Like I said above, the dealer was able to cut the key blanks, but mentioned that it was a little more difficult than they were used to. So the key blanks are probably a different alloy, which may be tougher to cut but should hold up better. ???

I expect that any key you buy for these cars would have the transponder chip in it, since they would be useless without it. It is assumed to be in there.

The dealer prices seem very fair - glad you were able to find a good dealer. Have you confirmed that they will cut + program a blank you don't buy from them? I don't expect them to guarantee they'll work, but it would not be too unreasonable for them to refuse to cut/program keys you bring in.

When I got the 3 non-remote keys, I did it because sometimes you don't want a full remote key. E.g., a hide-a-key that I have attached under my car in case I get locked out, or a key to stick in my ski pants or wetsuit, etc. No battery, smaller, etc. is actually sometimes better. My dealer sold those for $25 including cutting and free programming with the other ones.

Thanks Oldskewel for confirming the above links. I will make a purchase. I am planning to buy 2 remote keys and 2 non-remote keys.

I did confirm with the honda dealer earlier when i visited them for oil change, if i dont buy the keys from them, they will charge extras $10 for each key for cutting + $66 for programming.

Thanks for your advice.
