Hey y'all,

My wife's Odyssey wouldn't start earlier today. The battery didn't seem too dead, lights on the dash, etc. came on. I tried hooking up jumper cables to my car, it still wouldn't start.

When she would try to start I'd hear a click from under the hood, I think from the starter solenoid. I'm thinking the starter itself is bad. I believe the best test would be to make sure you have battery voltage going into the starter when the key is turned to start, but the starter is kind of hard to get at being under the battery.

What would you think the odds are it's the starter? We tried putting it in neutral in case the switch that detects that it's in park was bad. Is there anything else that would click under the hood when the key was turned to start, besides the starter solenoid?

If you jump the battery and the starter does not run, then likely bad starter.

I posted info on starter in forum, different years use different starter. Also, you can get good starter for good price if you see my posts.

What year is the Ody? When jumping be sure that the clamps are tight on the batteries. How many miles on the vehicle? Other stuff might click when turning to start position is the starter relay in the fuse box. Try to tap the starter then try to start it. Let us know.

I tried tapping on the starter, it didn't help. I pulled out the starter and battery and took them to Advance Auto. They tested the battery and starter and said the battery was good, the starter not so much. So that pretty much confirms it.

Percussive maintenance on the starter requires something a bit firmer than just tapping it - when ours went last year, I had to use a metal hammer and a socket extension (to reach it) and give it a series of solid whacks while the wife was trying to start the car then it would flip over - the bearing was pretty crunchy when I got the starter out, so it was probably getting bound up and not turning, and needed a couple of solid hits to get it free... in any event, replacing the starter on these vans is pretty easy - you pretty much just remove the battery+tray and the air cleaner, and then you have all the access you need.
