      Oil Change:

      Do those magnetic drain bolts work?

      Drain Bolt: "Hold my beer."

      The metal sludge layer:




      I use these on all my cars. It's pretty satisfying to see all those fine metal shavings stuck to the bolt. For what it's worth.


      For those who are OCD that may stroll across this post in the future. Crush washers, soft side facing the oil pan.

      As an interesting update, I can't find crush washers for the transmission drain plug. I tried going the cheap route by using Amazon and, as I'll explain below, I am clearly not a parts guy.

      So....

      I ordered some oil drain plug crush washers from Mission Automotive on Amazon. What arrived had an ID too large and an OD too small. That's when I realized I had forgotten to check the reviews...but at 4.6 stars I didn't think I had to.

      Here's the little devils...

      Uh, does it fit OIL drain plug? If so, then there is nothing to complain about?
      Does ID/OD stated in their description/picture of the product incorrect?

      Not sure about needing a new drain plug. You could just clean it up. Did your threads feel all mangled up? If, after breaking the initial bolt preload, your drain bolt smoothly un-threaded all the way out, then you probably only needed a new washer.

      Recently I changed my oil and ATF. I noticed that my oil plug alum washer was wrapped around the head of the bolt like yours was. Why don't mechanics replace this 25cent washer? OdyFamily is right, these guys should face public slapping.

      I believe the problem starts because the washer is not replaced. Then each time the drain bolt (either the oil or ATF) is reinstalled, it must be torqued higher to prevent leaks. Not good. Then we hear about some of these reservoir female threads stripping out. Nightmare scenario! Just change the 25cent washer!

      I was tickled when I found out my Odyssey, my CX-5 and my mother in laws CX-5 I service for her all take the same one. Quantity of 20 a ton for one car but for three cars I was stoked, lol. It’s the little things right?

      The same oil filter and oil apply to both my Odyssey and Outback - how cool is that. Gallon jugs all the way now.
      Thanks for the info - I am more inclined to replace the washers if I already have them on hand. Just did an Amazon order. With delayed shipping, I now have $16 towards Amazon Pantry... that's more than the two packs of washers!
