We have a '02 Ody with over 150k miles on it and recently it started making this ringing sound after it warms up. It happens at idle speed, or at least that's when we hear it. Our local repair shop told us that it's the alternator and will replace it for ~$500. Has anyone had this problem before? Anyone have any input on how to get the alternator out b/c it looks tight. I see others have experience with replacing just the internal components and wonders if this would be an option. Thanks in advance for your input.

Make sure to have the alternator tested to be sure it is the alternator making the noise. Other components run by belts in that area are the power steering pump and the A/C compressor.

Thanks New Dad. Would you please explain how you'd check the alternator for this problem? Electrically it seems to be working fine. Thanks.

Mechanics' stethoscope. I've used one to isolate "knocks" and "clanks" that otherwise defied positive verification.
