400 miles ago we had the timing belt, water pump et al service done. Today, our A/C stopped working and the dealer is telling us that the compressor, clutch and coil need replaced. $650 for the compressor, $340 for labor, $225 for their diagnosis(!) - $1250 the total cost of the repair, they are willing to knock of 10% to $1,118.

Thoughts, suggestions?

1st off the diagnostic $225 seems very high, I get max 1.5 hrs for a discharge, nitrogen fill and test for leaks.

Rock Auto sells Denso compressors for about $305 , 2.4 hrs flat rate time plus recharge 1.4 hrs up to 2.2lbs R134 $40

What is the auctual failure?, compressor coil?, brg?, internal failure?, Leak?

The failure type can determine what all parts are needed.

I'd get a 2nd estimate based on needing a compressor.

shop rate is $115/hr.

The service adviser called back and said they could do 20% off the job, total $994.

Will get a second estimate.

Thanks for the feedback.

This has been discussed here many times.

Search forum for "AC Clutch" ($130) and "Stator" ($60).

Or Google "Odyclub AC Clutch Stator".

And yes, you can replace these items without removing the Compressor.
