05 ody problems / defects ...

People have been reporting that the steering wheel won't return back to neutral, and will continue to turn unless you pull it back to neutral, and cause some unusual behavior or may lead to dangerous situation.
And this has been reported more than 3 times.
Anyone experienced this problem/defect?
Please report...

Thanks

Where have people been reporting this? I haven't seen anything here or at TOV...

That's normally due to a lack of castor in the suspension. I wonder if the specs changed in the suspension.

I'd consider steering not returning to center a "steering issue." I'd read a post about someone almost putting the '05 Ody in a ditch after punching the accelerator right after a turn. Now it becomes clear why. The steering (and wheels) didn't return to center by itself. I'd consider this a big minus on car handling.

If this is a defect, it can be fixed (timely if enough people make it known to Honda). If this is by design, it's unfortunate because it will be very tiring to be actively steering all the time.

Found the following post on edmunds that might explain the steering issue:

"Concerning oversteering Ody's:

I've experienced this on several Hondas that I've test driven. It comes down to the fact that new vehicles are shipped from the factory with a very high tire pressure (presumably to prevent damage in transit?). When the vehicles arrive at the dealer, they are supposed to deflate the tires to the proper pressure, but I've noticed that doesn't always occur.

If the tires have the over-inflated pressure, the steering wheel will exhibit a reluctance to "return to center" when you let go of the wheel.

I'd suggest a retest of the Odyssey, this time bring your tire pressure gauge, or ask the salesperson to check it.
"

Honda dealers -- is it true the vehicles are shipped with over-inflated tires?

Does this explanation make any sense?

Another fit and finish issue was I noticed on several 05's that the 2nd glove box (top) does not line up even with the dash board.

Another women pointed out the same thing when I was there. Never get the first few models.

I had this issue on my 01 - the pressure was close to 50 psi and 42psi, causing pull to a side and not returning to the center. They forgot to deflate the tires...

add this to the checklist !

I'm not a dealer but I know this is true. The dealers are supposed to lower the pressure of the tires when they deliver them to the customer. I believe they ship them with high pressure to prevent flat spots from forming on the tires if the vehicle were to sit in one place for an extended period of time.

My wife noticed the same thing on all the ones we saw...

I've noticed that my '03 Civic doesn't self center it's steering after a turn and it's tire pressure is fine. This problem isn't noticeable in our '00 Ody. I've never worried about it. I don't expect much from front drive vehicles anyway.

Alexmish, checklist

Alexmish, I've appreciated your knowledgeable posts on the Ody so my ear perked up when I heard "checklist". Do you have or would you mind jotting down some of the items on that list so I/we can be sure to nail them down with the dealer when picking up a new Odyssey? It would be a huge help!

I dont really have one... However, I think we need to take a prev year checklist (I heard that it was posted somewhere around here before), and add few more things to it.

I am going on vacation on Thursday, and by the time I will be back it will be almost the time to pick up my new Ody. If I will have some time during vacation (yeah right - taking kids to Disney World :), I will think of something.

So if anyone has any checklist for a prev year models, I could use that as a base...

PDI

When I got my vehicle, I found two pages of PDI information in the glove box. Someone went through a pretty extensive testing before delivering to us. I'll check the list again tonight if they've the correctly check the tire pressure. This explained why I told my wife that we need to take this new van to Firestone for alignment. I thought I hit a pot hole on the way home. I'm praying for my pregnant wife now. Thanks for the info..

Would that be a big burden to post the list here ? I will use it as a base for the checklist...

Absolute Not

Absolutely not but just a lot of typing and the liability of posting information. Let me see what I could do when I get home tonight. I'll think about it.

You should have your dealer to provide that document when you're about to pick up the vehicle. I think it's their liability for not delivering a safe vehicle.

Some dealers actually ask buyers to pay for the PDI. You don't have to. It's part of the sales as far as I know. If they do, gently walk towards the door without saying much.

If you are worried about liability of posting, just PM me the PDI. I will not post it, but will use that info as a base for my own list (with wording changes, too)

Tire Pressure

My dealer confirmed that Odysseys are shipped with high tire pressure. There is a red dot marked on each tire that indicates the tires were over-inflated prior to shipment. Should be adjusted during PDI, but would be best to confirm.

The PAX equipped Touring models are supposed to feature a tire pressure sensor and display.

Tire Pressure

I looked into my 05 manual ( the other day. It depicted a tire pressure sensor for vans that do not have PAX. If you look at the van's instructment panel, you should see a van diagram. It should look like a red tire next to the van for low tire pressure (as if you open one of the door). I think it was depicted in the spiral bounded features manual. Good luck..

Are you saying that the non-PAX Odys still have TPMS? Just trying to confirm that I understand your statement. Thanks.
