Honda Odyssey 20 - 28 mpg, WHAT A HUGE LIE MORE LIKE 11-15 MPG and I am an extremely mellow driver.
I bought a 2005 Honda Odyssey EXL. When I got this van I immediately noticed that I was getting about 13 mpg. I was extremely unhappy with this and took it back to the dealer. After a thorough check, they found nothing wrong and sent me home. They stated that there was a break in period and it would get better after I put a few more miles on the van. This never happened and I currently get 11 - 15 mpg. The case manager for the Northwest region for Honda Corp. states that there is a percentage of Odysseys that are having the same problem as mine and unless they can find something wrong, I am out of luck. She stated that Honda believes that the owners driving habits are contributing to the poor fuel mileage. I told her that seemed impossible to me because every vehicle I have ever owned has gotten better than stated fuel mileage and my driving habits have not changed.
Any one else having this problem?

Current milage: 11000
Service History: All oil changes have been on time. It has been checked for the fuel milage four times now and they have not found anything wrong.
Driving habits: I have never had a ticket in my life, which I point out because I want you to know I am not a speeder or floor it kind of person. My commute is a 3 mile 40 mph rd. with three stoplights to go through. I have had other people drive my car and they have also gotten terrible gas mileage.

Your entire commute is three miles, with three lights to sit through? If that's the case, it sounds like your van spends it's entire existence accelerating (fighting inertia), braking (scrubbing away energy), and stopped idling (burning gas while not moving). And then just as the engine finally warms up and is all lubed up, you're parked and shut it down. How has the mileage of your past cars been on this same route? Have they been "as advertised" or well below as well?

Oct 05 Consumer reports listed 10 vehciles that were way off from waht the sticker said they should get...It seems you are doing well....CR got 12 in the Oddy. And they drive like granny's!!

Their 0-60 and 1 mile times are always seconds higher than anyone else/

Good Luck.....

Your mpg certainly seems possible for that type of commute. I don't see where the Ody is overly fuel efficient anywhere but on the EPA sticker. We seem to get 1-2mpg better in all instances than our prevous 5.3L V8 4x4 Tahoe.

Our general average hoovers in the 18-19mpg range and that includes some highway, a 14 mile round-trip on rural 50mph roads, and a little bit around town.

This is the first vehicle I've owned that didn't average right between the EPA city/hwy numbers. This one won't even average the city number! Good stuff.

CR doesn't drive like grannies, they drive very inefficiently just like any other testers do. If you can't get the CR average in any vehicle, something's wrong...

IMHO, your mileage sounds right for your commute. This van is not designed for around town commutes (and why would it be).

That said, I am disappointed in the new Ody as well. I drive the same as before, my '01 got me 22 consistently on 18/25EPA, the '06 is giving me 18.

I just bought an EXL last month and for the first two tank fulls we are at approximately 20 mpg. My wife drives fairly aggressively around town and I go about 80-85 on the interstate. I'm sorry to hear that you have that problem especially since the best they can do is tell you that nothing is apparently wrong.

From what I've seen on this board, Wild Willy has the low gas mileage problem.

There was a thread where Wild Willy took his Odyssey on a road trip and actually got pretty decent fuel economy. The Odyssey is very sensitive to drving styles in city driving. My 05 had tanks below 20 shortly after we got it. I now regularly get in the low 20s with mostly suburban driving. You can click on the icon in my signature to see the details of my tanks. (I do tend to drive with fuel economy in mind). Tomorrow night I will be leaving on a long road trip and we will see what I can do with the Odyssey on the interstates.

If I can get consistent 18mpg in the city in a GTO..I must be doing something right

Not designed for around town commutes???? That is about as absurd as GM leasing me a GTO for 123.00 a month with nothing down!!!

So this is made to drive long distances ever day....go on vacation weekly??

I don't know..the vans I see go to the grocery store, go to the soccer, and baseball fields locally...Go out to dinner to local restaurants.....Drive to church, to ride the go carts...

Hence the term Soccer Mom

I wasn't trying to imply that you were doing anything wrong. Do you know the post that I am referring to? Are you the one that drives the Odyssey in the city also? I am not saying that some of the Odysseys do not have problems, but city driving is much more sensitive to driving style than highway driving.

so at 6 mi a day round trip, how long does it take to burn a tank of gas.

and wouldn't it make more sense to take a bicycle.

To be honest; I have a four mile commute with a 1998 Honda Accord and don't get much better than the Honda Odyssey. I am guessing I get only 15MPG. Problem is I tend to need the AC in the summer and the Heat in the winter. Short trips are a killer on vehicles. The startup time; the braking and accelerating and then parking basically before the engine gets hot enough to get going.

Besides; What is highway driving anymore? Basically just going from one Road Construction to another.

Have you checked your Tire pressure? Make sure you check it when the tires are cold. Driving just a short distance to the gas station will heat the air and cause the pressure to show at the proper or above cold PSI.
Yep...always 36-40 all four corners......Checked 1st thing in the am

I also bumped mine up awhile back for a decent highway trip. 38psi all around, fresh off a service...23mpg for 100% highway at 70mph. That was our best tank ever.

The only thing I have noticed is that 38psi causes all kinds of rattles/vibrations in the cabin. Has more rattles than my moms Caravan that's approaching 200k miles. Might have to lower the psi just to keep my sanity.

It wasn't too bad until just recently, after I bumped the tire pressure. We've always had a rattle in the driver size door window...but the buzzes and rattles are starting to come out of the woodwork. Wife officially logged a complaint yesterday.....
