My van was sitting idol and all of a sudden it sputtered out and now won't crank. We replaced the fuel pump and it's working and so it the relay. When we turn the key over it makes a whining noise and won't crank. Don't know what the issue is but need to get it fixed asap just need some ideas on where to start ...

I have the same suspicions, but I'd also put a mechanic's stethescope on the starter to verify the source of the whine. I've seen failed solenoids that don't allow the starter to engage but the starter motor still runs (motor noise=whine?)

Still going off the assumption that the fuel pump was the initial cause of the sputtering out. Also wondering if sputtering out was the right wording.

Well, you can manually turn the engine over at the crank and open the inspection ports on the timing covers to see if the cam gears are turning when you do that.

This sounds like the "Bendix" that engages the starter to
the flywheel has stuck, failed or gotten so poorly connected
that it can't honk the solenoid in, but can lightly spin the
rotor (not engaged = no load).

Every winter morning I would have to go and thump the
starter motor on my '66 Mustang with a 2x4 (kept just
for the job) , before it would quit doing the same.

I would begin (with ground off the battery) R&Ring the
fat red connection to the starter and the starter solenoid
ends. Ruling out electric feed quality, any change? If you
are up for pulling the starter, might inspect the action on
the bench (crusty? rusty? loose / broken connection to
the Bendix solenoid (or what takes its place - old school
is my frame of reference).
