my oil life is currently at 30% with ~15,000 kms on it. we are planning on a road trip next weekend going to woodburn, oregon which I will be putting approx 1,100 kms (round trip). the trip is only 2d/1n leaving early morning Saturday and coming back Sunday late night.

do you think i should be ok to change the oil after we come back from the trip? this will be the second oil change for my 06 ody.

the honda dealer wanted me to book the service by friday before we leave but i don't know what type of maintenance to be perform as it will show in the minder system once the oil life reaches 15%.

what do you think?

If in doubt, have the oil change.

What is there to lose?
so you mean just perform the oil change? but what about the other maintenance as given by the minder system? for sure the dealer will just reset it to 100%.

does anyone recall what service did the dealer perform on your Ody for the second oil change?

I am more used to miles but I would just wait until you come back.

There is no other maintenance besides tire rotation and overpriced dealer "checks". Because you have already had the oil changed once, I think you will be fine just to go. However, changing just the oil before you leave is OK too. Do look in the owner's manual at what the letters mean. You can also look here:

https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/RJAAI001_OMANUAL.asp

at a maintenance schedule for the 04 Ody. What gets done to these vans has not changed. Only the method of telling you when to do them. In other words the minder will call for a 30k (48km) service on the fourth oil change.

Does anyone recall the service/s performed on your second maintenance? Or should I just tell the dealer to replace the oil and filter then reset the minder system again to 100%?

It seems that the dealer "checks" are way overpriced even the tire rotation! But by not following the recommended maintenance minder system, will it void my warranty?

To check the upcoming maintenance code from the maintenance minder system:

1. Simply put your key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position.

2. Then press and hold the reset knob for 10 seconds until the Oil Life indicator flashes. It should also display the next scheduled maintenance minder code.

3. To avoid resetting the code simply turn the key to the "off" position.

The above is for an EX or EX-L, don't know about LX or Tourings.

I did the above procedure and showed maintenance B only. B is the most expensive service type in the main symbol not considering the sub-symbol.

Do you guys still bring your Ody to dealer for regular service like this or you just do your own oil change or you bring it to other auto lube center?

If I ask the dealer to perform the oil change only and not the rest of the overpriced "inspections", will it void the warranty?

In Canada, service type 'B" alone will cost a whopping C$202 plus tax. Per Honda.ca website, these are the things to be perform:

Main Item B/B1

* Replace engine oil* and filter.
* Rotate tires,** inspect for wear and adjust pressure
* Service front and rear brakes.
* Inspect parking brake adjustments.
* Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box and boots.
* Inspect suspension components.
* Inspect driveshaft boots.
* Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS)
* Check all fluid levels, condition of fluids and check for leaks.
* Inspect exhaust system.
* Inspect fuel lines and connections.

That describes a minor service. Notice it's all checks. They don't actually do anything. I think this service is valuable later when the van has more miles (km) on it. I even pay for one myself if I think I may be nearing needing brakes. I pay for this service instead of the major 30k (48 km) as I will replace the filters myself. A minor service in the US runs between $90. & $120. depending on the dealer and region.

I would wait until you return from your trip.

My 2nd oil change was at ~10k miles MM A1 15%. Oil change and tire rotation $50 at the dealer.

MM B 15% was not until ~15K+ miles. Same thing oil change, tire rotation, complimentary multi-point inspection (spring special) $40.

Also keep in mind that some dealers have their own schedules they would like you to follow. It may include many items you do not need and Honda corp. does not recommend or require. Using a dealer requires knowledge and sales resistance. There is no difference between a service writer and a car salesman. They both work on commission. Know what you need, tell them what you want done and learn to say no. When they say "you really need to have a minor service instead of just an oil change" I tell them I'll just have them replace the transmission fluid and spend the money on something useful.

I am actually considering bringing my car to the nearest Honda dealer down in US. :mad:
During my road trip this summer, I had my second service performed down in the US. It was a "B1" service.

I definitely would not get it done early. If you are at 30%, keep in mind that highway driving will make the oil life last longer. If you are only going to Oregon, I think you would have plenty of life left over to get back.

That being said, you could do a little research for a good dealership in Oregon and get it done down there if you're close to 15%. That way you save money: Canadian dollar is over par and Oregon has no sales tax.

It does take up valuable vacation time, though.

Emailed NorthWest Honda in Bellingham about maintenance B and was quoted only $110 + tax:

is this OK to have a Canadian model service in US? does it affect or void Canadian warranty?

Yes, it's OK. It doesn't affect your warranty at all. Remember, your Honda Canada warranty covers you whether you are in Canada or the USA. (An imported grey-market car is a different story.)

I just explained to the US dealer that I was from out of town, but needed my car serviced. Keep your paperwork so that you can prove at all service was done at the required time. When I got back, I was due for my 3rd service (A1) and when I mentioned to my home dealership I was in the US when I had the last service done, they didn't seem to care.

$110 USD? That's like $107.62 Canadian :D.

I called Surrey Honda and asked how much they charge for maintenance B and said C$202.xx

How can they charge twice the amount compared to US considering our Canadian$ is almost at par???

I also called Honda Customer Relations (main office) and said that I can have it service to anywhere I want without voiding the warranty. :D

When I come back from my trip I will just book an appointment with NorthWest Honda in Bellingham. I will just take note of the kilometers as they are using miles in US.

I remember my first service happened when I was in California and they only charge me $50 for an A-1 maintenance symbol.

Should I forward the email to my dealer here in Surrey? :p

I just came back from my trip to Oregon and put on additional 1100km in my odometer. :D

Oil life is now 15% and the only symbol that came up is Maintenance B. Does it mean no need for tire rotation (sub-symbol 1)?

I will be bringing my Ody for service in US rather than here in Canada. There is Honda dealership (with President's Award) near Bellis Fair Mall. I reminded my origin dealer that they still owe me one FREE oil change. :p

Amount?

My 06 Odyssey Lx didn't come with an owner's manual so I'm looking for a number. How many qts does it take for an oil change. I'll be using an OEM Honda filter with a synthetic oil...what flavor do you guys recommend? Oh...and how do I go about resetting my oil life reminder on the gauge cluster after I've completed the oil change?
Thank you.
