Hello
I'm looking to replace all the spark plugs on my 06 Odyssey and I have a few questions. I went through the forum and found a few posts that explain what needs to be done. My question relates to what are the possible bad things that can occur when I do this. Keep in mind that the van has never had these replaced. With that said are the plugs easily replaced at this time in its life? Is it possible to break one while trying to take it out and if so how hard is it to fix this?

Thanks

So I replaced the front 3 without any issues but the back 3 is where the issues start. With the socket in, I could feel it connected to the spark plug but when trying to unscrew them they would just spin around. This is using my just my fingers. The front 3 as normal were tight. I did manage to get the back middle plug out so it seems it was not in tight. Any ideas on how to get the other two out?

That’s the thing, the socket does not pull it out. It did with the middle back one. But the other two back ones it just spins. If I try to tighten it it doesn’t. It spins in both directions. Not sure what is actually causing it to spin because when I look at a plug it looks like the hex nut is part of the threads. So something else is broken. I think.

You will, at a minimum, destroy the coils to the point where they won't come out of the hole. You risk destroying the cylinder head, which could already have an issue if the threads are stripped out for the plug. You also risk overheating the valve cover and destroying that too.

You cannot leave the plugs loose. If the plugs really do just spin in the hole and won't come out, you have a major engine problem.

I had this issue of being unable to pull out the plug despite having loosened it plenty. I just kept loosening it and eventually it did come out.

Try to keep loosening it. It doesn't make sense that it would keep spinning. Your spark plug socket might not be gripping it well. Try using a magnet to pull the spark plug out since the plug itself is magnetic.

I decided to give it another try and was able to get the two spark plugs out. These two were not actually loose. The socket for some reason would just stop at the top of the plugs hex nut and I thought they were loose. I had to somewhat slightly hit the socket in with a hammer and it then went fully over the plugs. Just pushing it in did not work. Had to do the same when the new plugs went in, just for the two. Thanks for the suggestions from all. Now on to the other issues I’m having.
BTW I replaced the spark plugs because the acceleration was very slow. After the change that problem was fixed.

What tools are you using? What size socket?

Sounds like you need some new tools or at least a good spark plug socket. Congrats on not going to the dealer and getting suckered Into a new engine. You just saved yourself $6,000.

The '06 Owner's Manual lists the following plugs-

I'll leave it for others to comment on 'upgrading' to iridium. Ok, so iridium is the stock plug!

The laser iridium plugs are the OE spec for the engine so you should be fine.

I did not know that Iridium was stock, that's why I put upgrade in quotes. I didn't bother looking up the plug that was referenced. WiiMaster's post should have put it to rest!
When I needed to replace my plugs, I ordered what was listed in my Owner's Manual! :)
