I just picked up the van (2000) from an independent transmission repair shop with a rebuilt trans. He "warned" me that - b/c of new castle nuts being installed in the trans - that there is less gear lash than before. He said that b/c of this I may notice a little more whining than before. Well, let's just say it's VERY loud. It sounds like an emergency vehicle. This occurs only in 1st and 2nd gear, then it's quiet. I came down the street and one of the neighbors was outside and they stopped what they were doing to watch us drive by. Before I take it back, I'd like to have some idea of what the root cause is. I'm tempted to say torque converter bearings, but I'm not sure why it stops in 3rd gear. Anybody out there with some trans knowledge that can point me in the right direction?

Mine was quiet as could be after the rebuild. Ask them how long it should take to quiet down. Don't give it any longer than a couple weeks. No one should hear you coming.
