I don't know the numerical ratios but compared to 2001, gears 1 - 4 are "shorter" (numerically higher). Fifth gear is "taller" (numerically lower) than fourth gear on the previous models.

For the 4-speed the ratio's are: 1st-2.534, 2nd-1.502, 3rd-0.947, 4th-0.608, and Final reduction of 3.941. For the 5-speed the ratio's are: 1st-2.563, 2nd-1.552, 3rd-1.021, 4th-0.727, 5th 0.520 and Final reduction of 4.20. So the overall top gear ratio of the 4-speed is 2.39 and the 5-speed is 2.18

How does the lock up converter effect this? I always assumed that effectively gave you an extra 'gear'. Is that right?

Yes and no. A torque converter has to have some slippage at idle to allow the car to stand still while idling in gear. The problem with older torque converters is that there was always some slippage, even at highway speeds.

About 20 years ago, manufacturers began using lock-up clutches. These clutches engage, usually in the top one or two gears to eliminate slippage at cruising speeds, thereby increasing efficiency.

In most if not all cars, applying the brake pedal disengages the lock-up function. You can check this by lightly applying the brake while cruising down the road. The torque converter will unlock at engine RPM will increase slightly.

Anyone have a figure on the miles per hour per 1000rpm's in 5th gear?

George,

I didn't use math to get this, but just looking at my spedo and tach, our 02 cruises at 75mph (typical highway speed here) at right about 2000rpm.
