I was told by someone that Honda will soon have their yearly production shutdown to retool for the 2003 model. They said that soon it will be harder to find a 2002.

Anyone know anything about this or experience it last year?

Thanks,

Bryan

They have two plants operating now.

BTW, when I bought my Ody last month, there were 6-7 new EXs within 35 minutes of me and one LX.

Generally automotome plants shutdown for 1 or 2 weeks in the beginning of July. I wouldn't think they are doing that now. Was that a line from a dealer trying to get you to buy one?

What a crock!

There will be no significant (if any) change for 2003, so what's to retool?

FWIW, '01s seemed to be slightly harder to find around the end of July and in August of last year, just before the '02s were delivered.

Prevenative maintenance?

I doubt it's for preventative maintenance. The plant doesn't run 24/7, just lots of overtime, so doing PM work should not be a problem the for facilities.

Honda is known for doing fast model changeovers in their plants. This include switching from one generation of product to another. The changes for 2002 to 2003 should be minimal to none so I would expect zero downtime. Also, this change from 2002 to 2003 won't happen until around August.

I think a saleperson (if that is who told you) was just blowing smoke, but then again, when don't they?

It even includes switching from Odyssey to Accord to Pilot to...

Honda designs their platforms with all this in mind. They do work smart, not hard.

I heard the same thing from my dealer (who I trust completely) when I picked up my 02 Odyssey - as the above implies, he was not trying to get me to buy an 03 instead. He further stated that all 02 orders are being converted to 03 builds.

03s won't be delivered until September at the earliest - is your dealer saying that if someone orders an 02 now he'll have to wait 8 months and then get an 03?

This would be a departure from their previous practice. Last summer, they were still shipping new 01s from the factory up until just before the 02s started arriving.

One possible explanation is that the dealer I worked with to get my 02 Ody is a pretty small dealer and may not be getting much allocation. For instance, I booked my 02 Ody in late-August and it came in only in mid-January - I was the first one on his list with a RRP Navi model. He has had plenty of non-Navi EX and EXL sold against bookings but is not taking any more 02 bookings. The reason I went with this dealer is that I could afford to wait and this was the only dealer in the Portland OR area willing to do MSRP. He was nice enough to throw in some accessories to "reimburse" me for the delay.

You guys are struggling to get a dealer that will sell you a vehicle at MSRP
! Here in Ontario (where the beautiful Ody is manufactured) dealers will discount at least 500-1000 below MSRP. I myself have just started shopping for my 2002 SS EX-L RES (which probably won't be available until April/May) but I fully expect to get a min. $1000 off MSRP, hopefully more like 5% over dealer cost.

I guess is depends if the dealer wants to make sales quotas bad enough.

Canadian and US minivan markets have some differences, price controls being one of them.

Here in Massachusetts, MSRP is the rule it seems, but if you go to a decently sized dealer you can have your car immediately or in days, not months. We ordered an MB EXL-RES on 2/8, was told 10-17 days, it was in on 2/16. There are still a half-dozen EXs on the lot, and at least one other EXL-(RES or NAV, can't tell by price) on the lot thats been there for a week.

Hi SuperDad,

Can you tell me which dealer it was with Odys on the lot?

I'd like to spend more time inside than a short testdrive before putting down a deposit.

TIA.

Hope I don't get in trouble over it, but the dealer we test drove at was Herb Chambers, right in Burlington. See my post on the 'dealer stories' section to learn why you might want to think twice about buying from them. Deal with Susan Mcdonough if you go there. She is new to the car selling business, but is therefore not quite as high-pressure as the rest of them.

The place that seems to have Ody's to spare is Silko Honda in Raynham. Ordered from a guy named Roarke Dickson, but I have never met him myself. Drop our name, we will be picking up our Ody on Wednesday or Thursday, and would welcome a little extra credit. www.silkohonda.com. That's our MB EXL-RES, if you look at the new car stock!

Of course, our name is not listed anywhere here(duh). Just tell him we're the folks with the MB EXL-RES.

BTW, are you selling a dark blue Ford Escort wagon, by any chance? If you are, the parallels will be spooky. I only ask because there is someone from Lexington selling a car which is priced $5 below our nearly identical one.

SuperDad - thanks for the info.

I couldn't remember where I asked this question, so took some time to find it. Geez, memory is the first thing to go for sure.

And, no, I'm not selling a blue wagon 'cause... I don't have one.

Enjoy your Ody. Looks like it might take me some more time to decide (not related to the Ody wait time).

Regards,

SuperDad - can't find your post in dealer stories. Can you tell me the timestamp on the thread? Is it the one you initiated, or was it a follow-up to someone else's?

Thanks again.

Entitled "LoJack and other stuff", currently around number 12 on the list. I'd post a link, but don't quite know how.
