I hate to already post in this section an issue with an EX I took delivery of yesterday, but the view through the windshield appears to be distorted in places. I was hoping it was just speared with something, so I have cleaned it, but the problem is still there. I had noticed a similar problem in one I drove a few days before I bought.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? Thanks for any replies or suggested fixes. These windshields are at a very steep angle, so I guess imperfections will show up more. Thanks again.

Well, there are no suggested fixes. Distortion in glass cannot be repaired/fixed. You can go back to the dealer and get a new windshield but I'd hate to get a replacement on such a new car. Perhaps you can mention it next time you go in and get it notated and if it bothers you, you have 3 years to get it replaced I suppose.

Sorry that this happened to you on your new van.

Distorted windshields during test drive

I saw my first 2011 Odyssey yesterday (loved it, though it was gorgeous!) and it had a distorted windshield as well as distortion in either the side windows or the side mirrors. I couldn't tell which it was. So today I went to another dealer to look at my color choice (red pearl). It also had the distorted windshield and sides. I think you should have them replace it when they have a fix. Whoever is making their current windshields has something to answer for. I also test drove a Kia. The windshield was fine and it was a huge relief to my eyes. Tomorrow I'm going to go see a Touring model. If it has the distorted windshield I'll be taking a pass until they fix the problem.

I appreciate your reply. I plan to have them address it, but I will wait until I have more issues for them to fix under warranty. I did some research and found a link where Honda tries to explain windshield distortion as normal and acceptable. I don't think so.

Here is that link, and from there you can see other FAQs.

I am still interested if others notice this on the 2011. Thanks.

Well that is disappointing!

It sure was disappointing to read that Honda considers this normal. That means they aren't likely going to offer to replace the distorted ones. I guess I'll still go look at the Touring tomorrow but this doesn't give me much hope. Good luck with your windshield.

I didn't realize anything on my windshield but then my left sideview mirror is really weird. The car looks squished down compared to the other mirrors..? I took it to my dealership and my tech noticed the problem, so he went to the lot to look at the otehr odys, but he said that all the others look the same. Wth?

distorted side mirrors

I went to a third dealer yesterday to look at a Touring. I also retest drove the EX-L. Neither had the distorted windshield (thank goodness!) but both had some distortion in the side mirrors. Auto makers have been making undistorted windshields and mirrors for a very long time. What is wrong with Honda that they can't manage it in 2010? I guess I'm getting cold feet at buying a 2011 minivan as the Sienna boards are reporting lots of problems with their redesign and I'm worrying that the Odyssey will go through the same growth pains.

My advice to anyone buying one is to make sure you see the actual vehicle your going to buy before committing to it otherwise your in danger of getting fun house glass. One of the two distorted ones I saw was majorly distorted (messed with your eyes) and the other was distorted enough to be a problem but not as bad as the other.

What problems exactly are you reading about on Sienna forums?

A link

Here's a link to one forum.

http://siennachat.com/forum/index.php?board=34.0

I spent some time breezily browsing the various Sienna and Honda user forums last night so came away with a general impression.

I'm getting cold feet because I am questioning the wisdom of buying the first model year, not because the Sienna is horribly out of line with normal first year problems. I don't really need to buy this year since my main motivation is to give my Lexus to a family member who needs a car, not because it isn't working well.

My comment was more on the first year issues the Odyssey is likely to experience but it is too new to see any of them yet. I've been pretty spoiled with all three of the car's I've purchased over the years (2 Nissan Maxima's and one Lexus) and never had to run to the dealer to get any warranty work done. Just pay, drive, be happy and do normal maintenance. You could say I am easily spooked because I hate dealing with car repair people and dealerships especially. Another way to put it is that I don't want to be anybody's quality assurance department. :)

Just think of all the quality assurance folks that should have caught the distorted windshields. At the windshield manufacturer the engineering tech. says to his boss 'this is a bad batch'. Boss says put em in the middle of the shipment so they aren't detected. Honda receives them, samples a few doesn't find them, installs them. QA person at end of assembly line says to boss, these windshields are distorted. Boss says, were behind schedule pass em anyways. Dealership receives them. Acceptance person checks them over and says to boss, these windshields are distorted. Boss says, put em on the lot anyways we need to sell cars. No one on lot buys vehicle. Customer at another dealership sees the trim and color they want on the computer list of available vehicles. They buy vehicle sight unseen. Receive vehicle and now the problem is theirs.

Fast forward one year. Windshield manufacturer fired! Honda QA guy now more suspicious. Checks new glass shipments more thoroughly. Customer never gets a bad windshield.

I don't see any glaring problems in the Siennachat forums that should scare you off.

Similarly, I don't think you can go wrong with a first year Ody either.

Our 05 touring was a first year and it served us very well for 6 years.

Any car will have problems, that's what a warranty is for.

Cheers.

I also have a 09 F150 and guys on the F150 forum sometimes complain about distorted windshields too. I notice one minor distorted area in mine. I wonder if there's a common glass supplier throughout the auto industry?

I have not seen distortion on the 2011 Ody, as I have not really seen one for more than 2 minutes while walking though a dealership to get to the parts department, but I do know it makes sense. With today's steeply angled windshields, this is bound to happen more often. Not sure we can do anything except buy a Toyota TJ or something... :-/

BTW, found a high resolution picture of a 2011 Odyssey showing distortion through the windshield. Is that what you are talking about?

It also looks like the reflection off the dash. I just got my '11 touring elite last night, and i didn't notice any distortion today.

I notice the distortion too on my 2011 Touring. This distortion is the left-most and right-most 4" of the windshield. Its very noticeable to me buy my wife doesn't see it at all.

The driver's side mirror is convex, and quite a bit so. Objects are noticeable distorted but this design, when the mirror is adjusted correctly, I think is supposed to reduce the blind spot over your left shoulder.

Prost.

Appears to be no distortion of any kind in any of my glass.

However, my driver's side mirror has a slight convex shape in the upper right corner. If I look through that mirror at something behind and above my van, there's a slight distortion there.
