not sure what the exact purpose/intention was for the light, but it was in my wife's '03 Accord (only amber, not blue) and it is great for night hiway driving and seeing things without turning on the bright map light. It seems a little brighter in the '12 Odyssey we got yesterday, but still not a distraction to me anyway.

I actually wish it was a bit brighter to be honest.
I also wish the interior lights were red not blue, probably saving those for the Odyssey Type-S :stupid:

It's red in BMWs. It's just ambient lighting so you can see the interior of your car at night. I kinda like the blue. Red always felt jarring to me, even tho it's supposed to be the best color for night vision.

I think it is a orange kind of color. It did not bother me, although initially I thought it was unusual for them to choose that color as it is not the prettiest. Now I understand why they did that, and it makes sense to me now.

To the OP, as many have mentioned it provides just enough illumination to light up the central console area. Why do you want to turn it off? It is designed such that if you need to look at the central console area in a hurry, you could see things without having to look for light switches.

We just picked up or 2012 EX-L last week (with body molding I might add, love it!). But I'm one of those people who does not like the light. It's too much of a glare for my son when watching a dvd and sometimes I like to nap. I just find it annoying. Maybe I'll get used to it; but I would love to find a way to shut it off. Putting a piece of tape over the light of a $35,000 car just doesn't make sense. Then again, maybe I'm still in mourning over trading in my 2003 EX-L - loved that thing!

well - just get some black electrical tape... cut out a circle shape just larger than the LED and affix it. Works fine. I did the same with my young kid's baby monitors. The power on led lights were so bright on the cameras- it lit up the room. Not anymore!
Just a thought.

My husband thought it was to let you know where the blue tooth speaker is, hence it is blue. Seemed logical to me. Sort of. I can't say it bothers me but I don't find it particularly useful, either. Even if it were for blue tooth you don't need to yell right at the speaker, right?

they have this light in the MDX as well..
Concur, BMW also has this type of light but in a dark orange hue. It's perfect for seeing in the dark at night (moonlight effect) without the glare obscuring your night vision.

It's a map reading light. My friend's 3rd gen has one that is yellow. It's supposed to give you enough light to read something without turning on the brighter lights.

The LED can be changed out with some work =) Also if you want it a bit more orange in color hue and not killer bright, I just found you can cut a small circle from a manila file folder tab (The orange plastic ones) and pull apart the home link section containing the light. You can simply drop in a small cut circle and then reassemble, it'll go much more orange and dampen some light too. Or If you really hate the light, you can pull the LED out ,reassemble and voila, no more light
