Can someone check their Navigation Settings > Installed Maps screen you see if you see what I see?

My latest maps update failed but it seems like I have 2019 and 2020 maps installed. Is that how you see as well whoever has been able to successfully update the maps to latest version?

I would be interested in hearing more about this as well. I followed the instructions to a T, except the first time around I used a 32Gb Flash drive and the PC software complained it was too big. Repeated with a 16Gb drive, it downloaded successfully (3 hours) and the car recognizes the update but then fails at 10% (update failed, try again). Third memory stick, "unable to write" even though it is a brand new 16Gb Kingston stick out of the box. Same after formatting it on two different computers, FAT 32, default allocation size, also tried 16k and 8k. I am leery of buying more outdated 16Gb memory sticks but this is the only size which is acceptable apparently.

What does the maps screen say compared to mine? Do you all have 2019 and 2020 maps showing installed on that screen? Trying to determine if after 2020 maps update, I should still be seeing older maps installed?

My first update failed at 70 something % then each one after at exactly 14%. It looks like I have old and new maps now and the system still says there is update available but it fails at 14% when I try to update with various USBs 32GB and 16GB etc etc.

Hi Hogges. I don't have the Garmin software installed but we run into similar issues while transferring data back and forth from our Yamaha keyboards to our PC via a USB stick. We found the solution to be to try formatting the USB stick on the Yamaha keyboard instead of the PC. Can you format your USB stick on the Odyssey instead? Just a long shot :D!

One other thought. For success with our transfer of files, the actual file MUST reside in the root directory of the USB stick. If it's in a folder somewhere, despite drilling down through the binary tree, it doesn't work. Yamaha is obviously Japanese. So is Honda (at its heart). Perhaps these two companies think alike?

Hi Hodna,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the Odyssee doesn't have formatting as an option from the car itself. I tried formating the memory stick with my Linux work computer in FAT mode, which worked fine but I still had the same problem. However, I was finally able to update the software overnight with a third memory stick, a 32Gb Flash Drive, but I reformatted it to 16Gb using Windows Disk Management tool. It worked this time. Three memory sticks and several hours invested.... The Honda has an Android system, and I had updated it to the latest software before doing all of this.

how long does the whole update take, beginning to end? 3 hours?
(like the car has to be on for 3 hours?)
If so, screw this - I'll just use CarPlay. The internal map screen is too small anyhow (header and footers consume way too much space).

I was finally able to finish the update by starting all over with a new blank memory stick. There is only one map installed now. Aggravating process, also better plan to do this when driving for one hour, because otherwise you end up having to idle the car so it doesn't quit due to "low battery" shutdown when doing this in accessory mode.

What did you do differently to make it work? Did you also have two versions of maps installed like me when it was failing?

I bought a new stick 16GB stick, got it FAT32 formatted in windows, put it in the vehicle to get maps into downloaded, plugged into PC/Garmin express to download maps, then put it back in vehicle to install the maps. It still keeps failing. I have tried 32GB, 16GB started from scratch many times with formatting the USB

Dealer time.

Reformat your stick to clear any partial write issues. Go start the update process again. Make sure the Ody has fully powered down, and finished writing to the stick before removing it. Turning off the ignition, opening and closing the driver's door should do that. If you use an extension cable you can see the stick's LED give one last blink as the computer closes the drive at power down.

If that doesn't work delete the partition table and create a new one, add a single FAT32 partition and give it one last try.

The dealer may be needed but getting this working will keep you from needing a visit at every map update.

I don’t want to go to the dealer for this, they will mess up more things than fix. I have formatted the USB many times, one thing I can try is a totally different PC with fresh Garmin express software.

the maps seem to be actually updated. We live on a new street that wasn’t there in the older version but is there now. Worse case, I will leave it as is since things are working. Only thing I was asking here is if someone can check to see if they also see 2019 maps and 2020 maps or just 2020 maps?

Not sure it will help you because I'm in Canada, but here is what the map info on my 2018 EX-L Nav looks like. Might be different in the USA. I keep mine updated but don't use it for trips because the ETA is way out of whack. I use my trusty windshield mounted unit instead.

If you haven't tried it, resetting the navigation system might help. Trouble is, you'll loose all your saved information. If you take it to a dealer, chances are that's what they will do.

Thank you for the screenshots, I am in Canada too so that’s super helpful.

It looks like the 2010 maps got installed Then update failed before the system could confirm that all maps are installed and before it could delete old maps. Now it keeps on saying update available but due to partial new files, the update doesn’t complete beyond 14%. I am going to reset navigation and try. If that doesn’t work Then wait for next update to overwrite existing 2020 data or unless Garmin can give me a file to put on the USB to fix this. (I am in touch with them).

Speed about 1%-2% per minute roughly. I had the van idling, on accessory mode, driving, it always fails at 14% (I guess when it resizes it’s got new files. I wonder if this has something to do with Honda replacing my whole unit last year, maybe they needed to change something else as well or may it’s my USB/pc.

I wonder if anyone else go their navigation system replaced due to it crashing and then tried to update it?

I know this forum is to share challenges and solutions to stuff, but just want to report that my map update (2019 Odyssey Elite) went flawlessly. Hope others have the same experience, so this is what I did:
1. I created a 16GB partition (using Windows 10) - and ONLY that partition - on a SanDisk Ultra 32GB USB 3.0 (blue inside the USB connector, instead of red - which is USB 2.0)
2. Formatted using FAT32, default allocation size.
3. Kept the name NEW VOLUME (sometimes a blank volume name screws things up).
4. Plugged into Odyssey, started Map update (to load the XML file including VIN and other data to USB)
5. Plugged into PC, loaded files using the Garmin app (obviously). Note that the app recently updated.
Downloading files took about 45-75 minutes on gigabit internet (I walked away, sorry)
Total file size of Garmin maps = 9.37GB
THEN...
6. Plugged into Odyssey, 12:25pm
7. I manually requested the update process, but think it's unnecessary
8. The entire thing took about 21 minutes.
0-41% in 10 minutes (12:35pm)
41-62% in 3 minutes (12:37pm)
62-100% in another 9 minutes (12:46pm)
9. All maps are 2020.10 (plus world map is version 5.0). I can see some slight changes - my specific area is pretty stable/unchanged. But I'll see what's new as I drive around.

Thanks, I can see the updated maps too because the street I live on is new and wasn’t on the last map, it’s there now, just need to get rid of old maps. I have followed the steps with 32GB and went out a bought a new 16GB (as advised by Garmin as part of troubleshooting). My background is computer programming so I think from a user perspective I didn’t make any mistakes in following the steps....let’s see what Garmin comes Back with, they added to a “master ticket” when I talked to then last time few days ago. (It’s not just me with this issue).

I will keep you guys posted.

I hope your advice helped me. I was definitely spooked - especially reading back to the folks with system/infotainment update issues (my dealer actually did it at a service - which is normal procedure, rather than me at home).

The Garmin Navi system on my 2018 Honda Ody is stupid. I was driving on Hwy 401 W heading to London, Ontario and the system keep saying stay on highway 401 east, while am heading west. Also, Hwy 410 is north and south direction, but the system keeps reading the map as highway 410 west instead of highway 410 south or highway 410 north. I reported this to Garmin and Honda Canada last September 2020 and finally, I got an email from Garmin a couple of weeks ago advising me that the issue is fixed. They asked me to follow the steps at Honda Navigation Map Update | Garmin Support, and everything should be fine. So I downloaded the map, reinstalled and the problem is still there. Again, I called Garmin and they told me they know about the problem and it's being investigated. If ever, the update will be on 2022 as they update the map yearly. Garmin blamed their map supplier Carthograhy@ Garmin. Comes Honda Canada's response, "it's out of their control, it's Garmin's issues".

Honda really dropped the ball on their infotainment system. As much as I find wrong with Ford the sync just works. Even on my 2017 truck it updates over WiFi while parked in my driveway.
Try comparing it to a Tesla 🤣. Hop in the Odyssey and plug in the phone and use Android Auto for everything (Maps, music) and pretty much just use the "infotainment system" as a [tiny] screen to mirror my phone.

I updated my maps without any issue by following their instructions. You dont need to leave the car's engine running, just put is in accesory mode or whatever it is called where the car is on but the engine isnt running. Also make sure to use a fast USB 3.0 flash drive, not some USB 2.0 cheap peice of junk that you found in the back of the drawer or on sale for $2.
