The 3rd row 12v outlet was having issue so I checked fuse and power at rear of outlet. Power was good. After some research, there was a recall on the outlet. In the end, the dealer replaced outlet under warranty. Fast forward to 2 weeks later, the front 12v outlet went out (same issue). This time I was beyond the factory warranty period.
Using a paper clip binder (wire), I was able to remove the outlet (see pic). Instead of replacing with another and having the same issue later, I decided to hack the plug by drilling from center rear to center metal piece. Testing with ohm meter, I confirmed center hole drilled to metal (positive) would make contact. Then I soldered some solder to the metal and to where the plug connects (see pic). Again tested with ohm meter touching inside center and terminal connector.
Pretty straight forward and simple to ensure direct connection to the plug.
Others suspect the plug is designed to handle 10 amps and low heat. I normally run a 4.6amp dual usb charger and a 4.8 amp igloo frig when traveling, so not sure why it would die. Only the frig was connected at the time.
I also added a dual usb outlet on the 3rd row passenger side by running power from the rear 12v power outlet (behind the 3rd row seat).
Wire taps into rear outlet.
