We took out the all-weather mat in the trunk today and found a nice surprise. There was about a 1/4 inch of water pooled up on the carpeting. The water was clear, and there was no overt smell. I externally examined all the seals and looked for any obvious signs of ingress, everything looked normal. After drying everything out completely with a wet vac and air dryer, I attempted to identify the location of the leak. The best I can say, without removing any interior paneling, is that it starts getting wet first on the carpet closest to the bumper corners. A quick internet search shows this is known issue with these cars across different years.

I called the dealership and my car is out of warranty as of 12/31/2022. I feel like I'm about to get stuck with a huge bill for a manufacturing defect. What can I do?

It is not always easy to find a leak and takes a lot of patience to do so. I would recommend puling the rear carpet, place several sheets of disposable paper towels in the bottom of the cargo well, to be able to see if water is coming in as you can see the towel getting wet, but just water in naked is not easy see, than close the hatchback. Using a garden hose and starting around either side left or right rear end corner, and work-up that corner while looking inside to see if any water is leaking in, be patient as it will probably be a small leak and hard to chase down. Starting Continue up the corner (including around the tail light). Once you reach the top corner, go around the hatchback door seal again starting on the bottom and left side until all away to the top left side. Work around the tailgate trim (plastic H, license plate, rear push button release, camera area). Next move over to the right corner bottom and work up just like the left side rear. Next move to the right side of the tailgate and do the same. Now move to the top of the tailgate and go around it seal. Last is to water around the top of the GPS/Radio antennae.

The only areas remaining is if their is a plastic plug missing in the cargo well or possibly if the tailgate vents are blocked up on the bottom of the tailgate and cannot drain out any water that enters the tailgate. The worst area is checking the interconnection sealing material between the rear cargo area (floor level) and the underneath the rear seat area, it seems to me sometime back someone posted a picture of this being a problem on his ODY. You will need to do and advance search on that.

Appreciate it. But I don't have the time or skill to fix this.
