I am looking at getting a Power Acoustik 7" Hi Resolution LCD monitor (I assume it is roof mount) with DVD player including an FM Modulator for $549. Anyone have any experience with theautoaccessories.com? Any experience with this package - Is it good? Is it easy to install? Is wireless installation as good in quality as hard wired installation?

It certainly looks like it! Thanks for the link (saves me $50!) if it is infact the same. Any thoughts on or experiences with the system or the seller, anyone?

Good find! I'd be interested to see what DanDan has to say about this system...

Looks to be exactly what I'd want as well..

Me too. Oh well, us early adopters & all. Hey, check out the wireless option ($40 or so from Crutchfield or Mobile Authority) to go with this unit and you got a damn good system for sub $600.

You can IM 'maaudiojoe' (AOL IM) for details about the wireless transmitter & reciever units.

Fullscreen letterbox DVDs and an out-the-door price of under $600.

Ha! I was just thinking the same thing Marvyn. I'll have to revisit this whole issue after my van arrives. My wife is wisely suggesting that we actually live with the van for a bit before I start dumping additional cash into it (just got burned on buying lots of accessories for a lemon Volvo). But I'm sure glad to see things going this direction. I wonder how long until somebody gets wise and packages a real, complete unit for a good price:

DVD player with INTEGRATED wireless sender and FM modulator, 7-9" widescreen roof-mount, flip-down screen (with integrated wireless receiver). I'm not real fond of having all those loose little boxes to hook together and plug into a power source. Wouldn't it be great if somebody integraged all this stuff? Sure seems to me that the aftermarket is large enough to support a product like that now.

Darrel; I suspect you could 'crack open' the transmitter & reciever and possibly fit the 'guts' of the reciever into the flip-down component of this system and likewise the guts of the transmitter into the DVD player (at the very least you could velcro it to the side of it or something). As long as you ensure your reception is perfect I don't see any issue with doing this yourself.

*sigh*. I put off ordering the traveltheater as long as possible hoping the price would drop and I could smack myself (literally) for not picking up on the 7" widescreen v. 6.8" 4:3 ratio until after I had already bought it. I believe you were the one who brought this to my attention shortly after I was going through my install notes on here.

Don't get me wrong; I really love the system I have...there's just always room to 'love it a little more' to the tune of a cheaper system with a feature (widescreen) that I didn't pick up on.

Ok, I spent some time on that website, theautoaccessories.com. One thing that bothers me is the product is low end, that's why the price is right. The motto goes you get what you pay for! And I will quote the most important thing when you are going to spend a grand:

We are committed to full customer satisfaction.
30 Day Warranty thru THE on all products and Services.
All products are Brand New and covered by Manufacture Warranty.
Policies and Prices are for US Customers Only
Shipping and Warranty vary for International Customers

Which means to all of you who purchase you get a whole 30 days of warranty and then you get stuck trying to get the manufacturer to warranty it. Good Luck! They will probably be out of business by then. I do use Fahrenheit but not very much. If I have a job with a skinny profit I will use it but let the customer know its only a one year warranty. The 7 inch monitor looks nice and the DVD is good too. I just like to buy knowing I can get service when I need it. This company could care less about you. I also noticed that they are selling Movie Vision and Alpine. Well that will stop soon since they are now what we call Trans shipping product. Alpine and Movie Vision are very strict about selling outside a certain territory! Crutchfield is the only one that I know of who can legitimately sell on the net. The prices are good but I highly recommend you hire a pro to install it. I would not start hacking up my new ODY to save a buck. You might be getting a good price but absolutely no warranty on a less then quality product. That's my opinion only. I like the Audiovox for it's a very nice product and great warranty. Gonna cost more, but hey it's the trade off I guess. Just shop carefully, TheAutoAccessories.com will probably be shut down or toned down on the name brands. Everyone sells Fahrenheit and Mobile Authority, or even Power Acoustic. That's because anyone who says they sell electronics can purchase them. Any questions fire away!

The ebay ad's monitor is not from Power Accoustic. It's Performance Teknique. I can't find any info on them accept that they make woofers. I'd like to know how to contact them for warranty info.

That's why I am questioning if it is the same one Viskha is looking at from the autoaccessories.com

I got a response from AutoAccessories.com - the item on ebay is a medium resolution monitor. The high resolution system is infact $549 (still appears to be a good price assuming the equipment is good).
DanDan: You say the product is "low end"? You also say "The 7" monitor looks nice and the DVD is good too". If I get a professional to install it are you saying that this may be a good deal. For warranty on most products (especially through the internet) one typically has to go to the manufacturer anyway. Your opinion is valuable - please provide your thoughts.

Ok, let me word it this way, would I purchase this for my vehicle knowing what I know with the industry? NO! Maybe the DVD since they have been reliable for me and there sold under the Audiovox name. The only reason the monitors seem cheap is that they are refurbished screens from overseas. In the orient they have some casino game that is real popular and every few years they change the screens. Which creates a market for them. They refurbish them and sell them over here cheap! That is fact, not fiction. I looked again at the website and the 7 inch only includes a headphone jack, no headphones or wireless included. By the time you buy all the required equipment you could have bought a name product with a good warranty local and been very happy. Now , ask me what I own in my personal vehicle. First off, I do not drive an ODY, wish I had because the POS I have now is nothing but junk. I have a 99 GMC Safari. It does the job and it's paid for. I have an Audiovox 682 system in it. I custom made the overhead and I have a HI FI stereo VCR. I own maybe 4 DVD's so the VCP fits the bill. We have hundreds of tapes so it fits for me. I am a simple guy who likes mostly OEM. My radio is the factory AM FM CD. We have 5 headphones in it all the time since we drag all the neighbors kids with us. We went on our first long trip two months ago since it's been installed. What a pleasure not having the kids fight. We drove 14 hours straight to Tennessee. When I was resting in the rear seat the kids were either doing Nintendo or we were watching a movie. We even watched the news in Atlanta. It's a must with kids. Maybe I wouldn't have lost all my hair if we had it sooner! :) I now charge $1100 installed to the dealers down here in South Florida for the VCP system. It's called the MVP-400D. To upgrade to the DVD it's $150 more. To have both its $1400 that includes everything. On some vehicles it's more for the custom overhead consoles such as the Expedition. The best thing it includes the 3 year warranty! The nice part is my company is mobile and we come to you to put it in. Customers like the personalized service and knowing how to use the system and giving there input to us. I will quit rambling and go to the chase. You have my input and just make sure you don't forget all the little add ons. Your decision but I would steer clear of the off brands. I am going to call my distributor tomorrow and see what he's getting for that product.

Sorry about being long winded, tough day with the rain down here,

But alas, not mobile ENOUGH!
When your company gets big enough to do installs in CA, please drop me a line!

Ok, seriously - I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. It is invaluable, and appreciated greatly. I'd have you install a DVD system for me in a heartbeat if you were anywhere near me. If we ever decide to drive across the country, you'll be our first stop on the East Coast.

Now, I don't want you spending TOO much more time on this, since it may take valuable time away from the single-button-unlock project.....

Regards,

Oh, and DanDan -

I meant to ask: Do you ever forsee a fully integrated, quality system like what I mentioned earlier? Think how increadibly simple it would be to install a system that consisted of a roof-mounted screen/wireless reciever, and an integrated DVD/wireless signal sender/FM modulator. You mount the screen, plug the screen into power, plug the DVD into power, and plug the modulator into the antenna cable. Done. If somebody would make a package like that for the DIY'er, you'd think they could sell quite a few of them.

So, the question again is: Do you see any mfg headed in the direction?

And finally - What would you recommend for a widescreen? As far as I can tell, the Audiovox system you are talking about is a 4x3 screen. My movie collection is 100% DVD, and widescreen is mandatory for me.

Thanks again,

Yup, I'll bet that would be possible, but doesn't it seem like there would be a great market for a fully integrated system like this? I'm sure it will come, just probably not in time for me (sound familiar?)

Now, get back to learning...

I don't see a do it yourselfer in the near future. It's still too complicated to try and make simple. Someone would figure out how to burn there car down! Besides it would be no good for my business. I don't move boxes per say. I make my money on the labor! As far as widescreens go the voh-702 is the model of Audiovox with the 16:9 aspect ratio you want. It's the Headphone setup I do not care for. I like the infared better than the RF style is comes with. It comes with the RF transmitter but I just throw those away and purchase the Infared or 900 MGHZ system. The Audiovox does sell systems as you mentioned but only the 6.8 and 8 inch models. They are working on a system for the 7 inch. It's cheaper when you buy as a package thats all. You still will want a pro to install it. I know it's tempting to do yourself but I dont recommend it. I love to do projects myself but I have to remind myself to practice what I preach!

Ok ok, this thread is getting a little 'heady' and I want to make a couple of points:

1) The traveltheater has pretty much everything you need (wireless headphones, easy to install, wireless av transmitter) but has a 6.8 screen (4:3). This can easily be installed by a non-pro. (If I can do it, ANYONE can do it!
)

2) I was at BestBuy yesterday and noticed several screens (including HDTV units) and portable LCD/DVD players and mobile flipdown lcds and I found that *none* of the 16:9 screens played widescreen DVDs at full-screen!!! This was an eye-opener (of course the sales morons couldnt explain it to me) to me. There were black bands (albeit much smaller than 4:3 sets) at the top and bottom of these displays when playing widescreen DVDs. I went to the setup menu to ensure the DVD was indeed in widescreen mode and it was.

Can you explain that one? There was always a band (about 10-15% of the screen display I'd estimate) on these screens. Maybe the DVDs I was watching were not truly 16:9?

Errol? You oughta know this one.

Marvyn -

There is not one single wide-screen ratio. 16x9 has become the standard widescreen size, but movie ratios are all over the map. If you view a "tighter" widescreen movie, they still need to put the bars top and bottom, or you'll lose info on the sides.

Make sense? I can provide actual ratio numbers if you're interested, but this should answer the question.

Hi ya folks,

Movies come in a number of formats:

Normal or full screen
- 1:33

Widescreen
- 1:78
- 1:85
- 2:35
- 2:39

There may be a few more odd ones for both formats.

Widescreen tv sets are 1:78, so anything not in this format will have bars on the top and bottom.

Most of the time, however, 1:85 movies fill the screen because sets come from the factory with a lot of overscan (parts of the picture that is not seen on the edges because it is "zoomed in").

How the movies are shot, produced, and transferred are up to the production companies. So, expect movies to come in different formats. Next time you shop for movies, check the back to see what format it is.

I still haven't bought a system for the van. I will probably wait until a 12" widescreen or bigger comes out... The current crop are just too small.

Thanks,
Errol

Errol - Your pictures are worth 1000 words.

It'd be nice if the people who sold devices like this knew a litte something huh?
