Can't help with the step by step thing; however there are several factors to consider. If the compressor has chewed itself. there may be metallic debris throughout the system. How do you flush that stuff out? If it has been open to the atmosphere, you will need to replace the dryer. Good idea in any case.
Does the new compressor come with the correct amount of oil? Do you have the vacuum pump and gauges to charge the system properly? etc. etc.
I will be looking at this pretty soon myself, went to the Helm web site today, it says that they are out of the manuals for the 2002. Ordered a used manual off of ebay tonight. Have you made any progress on this ?
