It’s TX, I get it but dealer says a/c fine but it’s not blowing cold. Car idle for over 10 minutes. Driving down the street it’s warm barely cold. Cranked our 4 runner and ice cold within 3 minutes. I’m still sweating in the car. Anyone? This can not be normal!

Southern CA over here where it's 90-105 on a daily basis and our van gets nice and chilly.

You're saying the dealer said the AC is fine and that this is normal? That's ridiculous. Bring the van to a reputable mechanic and get an AC service, or if it's under warranty, insist that it's not fine and have your dealer do something about it.

At idle and really at the beginning it’s not. It will blow cold as we are driving. I do not understand this. I could see if this were a 4-cylinder. We bought this car certified ore owned in the winter. Interestingly enough, we struggle with the car warming up and getting the inside hot.

I’m really scratching my head. It is under warranty and I am going to have a mechanic check it out and then deal with the dealer.

Any ideas what this could be?

Sounds like you're probably low on refrigerant, though I'm far from am expert. You may also have an issue with your fans not kicking on or not getting to full speed while idling.

This could be something like a blend door motor or similar. How is the rear AC compared to the front? (if the rear AC heats/cools better than the front, it is a mechanical issue with the AC system, not a refrigerant issue)

Second mechanic shop inspected and said they added a small amount of refrigerant and to put car in neutral at red lights and give it gas.

I don’t understand this? I can try and find another mechanic. I wish I had a temp gauge that I could trust to give some examples for a mechanic.

What am I missing?

Have you removed the plastic "lid" off the top of the radiator/condenser and washed out the bugs stuck on the condenser? I paid once to have my freon checked...it was fine but I was charged to clean off the condenser. It's been cold ever since because I spray the bugs off after long summer highway trips.

We had a very similar and frustrating issues that took over a year to resolve (I think the warranty division was playing games). The car would idle and there would be no cold air, and the pressure of the air would vary from light to heavy flow. Once driving, it would begin to cool down, especially at higher speeds. Honda had our car off and on for a total of probably 6 weeks over the course of that year and STILL failed to resolve it, despite replacing many parts. One trip to our trusted mechanic, and it was fixed. I believe in our case it was a blower motor causing it. Good luck!

I used our thermapen thermometer in the air vent and took a video of the temperature rising to over 105 degrees to get the service division to take me seriously. It didn't help resolve the issue, but it did convince them there was a problem. I also monitored RPM and opened the hood while it was not cooling to see if I could notice whether the two fans were actually turning.

HMU have been sitting still with the car at 2200 rpm and it is not cooling. In fact it’s cycling on and off warmer when the car goes from 2500-3000 rpm.

It’s not cold.

Interesting! This is great feedback and info. It was odd today that I had to rev up the engine to get it to cool down. When I did I noticed the air flow pause and or change intermittently. It then blew warmer like warm. 2 of my 3 kids in the car were asleep and man I was sweating.i started to drive around and that didn’t get it cooler. After we left our stop I got on the engine (driving pretty quick with quick acceleration and the a/c started blowing colder. I cannot imagine that with all the soccer moms out there that drive these cars that this would be an acceptable issue without serious recourse and drop in sales. There has to be an issue. I plan to take it back to the Honda dealer and insist something is not correct. Thankfully I have a certified prepared vehicle as help to resolve.

Charlie, although I’m not in the back, the temp seems to be the same. I did stick my hand behind my seat to check the above vent for the second row and the temp felt the same. The one mechanic said to always leave it on sync and low for a/c. Which we always do. We also always have it set to recycle.

That does sound similar! With ours, if I opened the hood while idling in my driveway, the temperature would come down to warm vs. hot, and sometimes even start cooling. Every once in a while it work, but it failed fairly predictably on our very hot AZ days. I began carrying my thermometer around in my car and taking videos every chance I could, because being intermittent (yet stubbornly persistent and almost guaranteed when sitting at a bus stop or idling in a parking lot), it was much harder for the service department to diagnose. The thermometer would show the temp rising and falling, but never getting cool unless driving at speeds (and even then I would sometimes get warm air) When the dealership had trouble getting it to happen, I told them to park it in the sun with the hood closed, and then they were able to duplicate the issue. They began by replacing the compressor clutch, then battery. I believe they either replaced or checked the fans, then the entire condensor assembly. There was talk of fighting warranty again to replace the compressor. Honestly, I am not quite clear on the details anymore because it was such an ordeal, but each time they did a repair, they would quickly get it to work momentarily and move along. Either the techs aren't trained to repair anything that doesn't show up as a code when the diagnostic is run, or Honda was intentionally slow-leaking proper repair to increase revenue from the warranty department (the battles were part of the frustration & duration of our car being at the shop). We had a mechanic that we liked, and in Honda's only defense, I initially ran the problem by him and the intermittent nature did make it difficult to guess what was going on, hence using Honda's warranty. As soon as our warranty was up, we went back to our guy. The problem had progressed & I told him of everything that had been done. He immediately knew what part was suspect and he was right. Since my memory is hazy, I will call him tomorrow to double check that it was, indeed, the blower motor. It might give your mechanic something to troubleshoot. I can't remember the cost, but I remember thinking it wasn't that bad - I want to say $350-$400 or so and we haven't looked back since the repair a year ago.

For what it is worth, I should also add that on ours, the air did not cool down when I revved at idle.
