I am hoping to take delivery of an EX model next month. The dealer is offering a complete after-market VCR package made by Magnadyne (sold as 'Movie Vision') with a 6.4" viewable screen for $1050. I don't understand the technical aspects of the system but am wondering if this is a decent brand of equipment, whether the screen is smaller than the factory standard and whether there are better package deals to chose from.

Never heard of this brand. Seems a bit pricey. I think your could get 6.8" screen from someone more reputable for about the same or even less $$$.
Audiovox and Panasonic are two brands that come to mind. Many other choices out there.
If you go to DVD, a 7" 16:9 format screen may be a better choice...

I plan on going the VCR route. Who out there is reputable in terms of helping to put a system together that I could perhaps have installed at my local Circuit City? Is it possible to put together all this (pre-intallation) for as little as $1100?

I think you should easily be able to do it for around $500.00 (plus installation)

This is what I did for my 2001 EX-N:

Jensen 6.8 inch flip down monitor/tv $272.00 at ubid.com; http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=3887
fm modulator $30.00;
sony 12 volt mobile vcp $108 from electronicgiant.com;
Add-a-circuit $5.00 trak auto;
amplified tv antenna $50.00 owdonald.com (needed if you want t.v. reception too);
Radio Shack noise filter $20.00;
Miscellaneious wire nuts solder, etc. $10.00;
I also got a mobile dvd player for 12 volt use at Fry's Electronics for $149.00.

Thus, I have t.v., vcp, and dvd options.

There are also complete packages available on ebay for around $500.00 with vcp, and around $550 with dvd, including wireless headphones.

DVD is much easier than VCP in terms of storage of tapes vs. storage of disks imo.

Did my own install. Very do-able for someone with moderate skills. Instructions for ives system at handa-accesories.com were very helpful.

$1,100 for no name system with vcp seems pretty steep.
