Alternator Overcharging

7694 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  itr0754
My battery has been dying overnight for the last couple of nights.
The idiot dashlight for the battery has been coming on frequently too.
I checked the battery voltage at idle to be 14.8 VDC. Under full load
it's around 12.5 VDC.
My wife took it to a mechanic today and he says the alternator is overcharging the battery and needs to be replaced.

Do anyone have a DIY process for changing the alternator?
Thanks,
WB

It looks like I'll be changing the alternator on my "95 this weekend. I'll snap some pictures and post them up.
I seem to be having the same problem. As I drove home from work, I noticed the dash lights became unusually bright. The "charge" light came on as well. I tested the voltage at the battery when I got home and I was getting 18volts when I rev the engine. I am pretty sure the alternator died.
