I am replacing the alternator on my 2006 EX-L RES tomorrow. The car has just under 37k miles. I am also replacing the serpetine belt and the power steering pump which has also gone bad. Should I replace the tensioner too ?? Any tips or advice on the process ?? Thanks !!

HELP !!! How do I pull the alternator out of the engine bay??

I'm in the middle of replacing the alternator on my 2006. I removed the PS pump (which I'll be replacing too), ground cable and power plug from the alternator. I also removed the two screws holding the alternator in place but there doesn't seem to be enough room the pull the alternator out of the engine bay !!! Do I need to remove the cooling fans or anything else to get this out or what ?!?! Please help !!

Well, I got the alternator out. It seems the ONLY way to get it out of the engine bay is through the front of the bay so out came the radiator assembly. I figured I'd just flush the cooling system and add new coolant while I'm at it. You could probably remove the front impact beam and gently pull the radiator assembly towards the front and make enough room to get the alternator out. I'll post some pics and try to get a DIY up after I'm all done here. The new alternator is already installed but the place where I was planning to get the PS pump was all out when I arrived so now I'm still trying to locate a pump so I can finish the job.

hey-
I would recommend replacing the tensioner pulley while you're at it. I have an '06 LX with 60k miles and my serp belt just slipped off 2 weeks ago. I put a new belt on it and it's been fine so far. I'm hoping it makes it another 30k without slipping off - then i'll have them replace the belt tensioner when they do my timing belt. Sounds like you had some bad luck with only 37k miles.

I was planning to replace the tensioner pulley but it checked out OK. The hydraulic mechanism is fine and the pulleys are in good shape. I've used the van for a couple of days now and everything seems straight so far. I'll keep your advise in mind. Thanks !!

Here's an update .. 4 weeks, going on my 3rd Autozone alternator. Short and sweet, Autozone lifetime-warranty alternartors are crap. Don't buy them !!

Your alternator crapped out @ 37K...wow...Did you try to go to the dealership to try to get a Goodwill out of Honda?

06 EX 48,000 miles, Brought it in for the second power steering reservoir, change, apparently the 1st dealer replaced the reservoir, but did not replace it with the redesigned one---that's a whole different thread. Then I hear another noise after replacement, turns out it was the alternator bearing going. Honda was nice enough to get it changed out, and partially covered good will. They covered 90% of it, I owed the other 10%. About $650 parts and labor if it was not covered.

Actually, most rebuilt alternators you find at Autozone these days are not built with the same quality as from 1990s.

Rebuilding the Alternator is not that difficult but you need to put in some effort.

I wrote this for my 1998 BMW 528i Bosch alternator to give you an idea of what involves (Honda Alt is made by NipponDenso):
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1453975

The key thing is:
- At 37K, you can keep the original bearings, b/c they typically last 120K or so.

Then contact these guys (Smith Co. In Greely Co) know their stuff!

http://www.smithcoelectric.com/servlet/StoreFront

- Get new brushes PN 7390-901...$1.25/each brush, you need 2 brushes.
- Get new regulator PN IN6315...$46

PS: At this mileage, likely bad regulator. Sometimes you can simply replace the regulator ONLY, leaving the Alternator alone.

Long story made short, three Autozone alternators in about a month's time but it looks like I finally got a good one. Next time, I am biting the bullet and going OEM. Much more expensive but worth the while in time saved replacing bad alternators from Autozone. Installation is a bitch too. The alternator does not come up and out from the engine bay without tilting the radiator forward and, to tilt the radiator, I had to remove the front bumper support.

Too bad you went with the Zone on that one. I lost my Maxima's alternator last winter. I parked the car and started my reasearch so that I can replace in spring. All I read all over the net was that the Zone rebuilts ones are a crap chute at best. I went with the Advance Auto one. Both Advance Auto and O'Rielley (sp) have much better quality rebuilt alternators. Went with Advance due to a nice coupon deal. The alty has been in the Maxima for over 6 months without issues. It has a lifetime warranty just in case. :)

It was still $130 compared to $375 for the OEM. Easy decision on that one for me.

update

Had to go with autozone because they were the only store that had it in stock when i needed it. Hopefully the second one will last, it has only been a week, if it fails again i might just as well fork up the money and go with OEM. Thanks for all the info.

Actually with OEM it is only $280, so not that bad, see my post above.

On the other hand, a worker from Autozone told me this:
- Duralast Alternator is a rebuilt unit, for the most part it is good enough.
- But if you choose Duralast "Gold", you basically get a new alternator (all the inside is new from stator to bearings, to regulator, the only thing that is old is the casings and that is it).

Duralast "GOLD" is the one I got .. replaced that sucker three times before I got a good one. I have to go with the OEM bandwagon on this one. It takes about an hour just to get the darned thing out of the engine bay just to drive out to the store and start putting everything back.

Hey what noise did it make??

can you hear my engine noise? sounds like power steering pump to me.

youtube of my engine noise

My dad learned this with a citation back in the 80's, was horrible to get water pump out, and he replaced it with a guaranteed one, but his labor was free! Needed a second one soon after the first...:p

That sounds like a PS pump to me

That's the same noise I was getting. I could also see the vibration on the PS fluid reservoir. This looks very much like a bad PS pump. Is this fairly common on Odys ??

There are multiple very large threads on PS pump issues on here. It would be fair to say it is a fairly common issue on the 3rd gen.
