in an article on smartmoney.com website referring to auto insurance, they note that getting additional coverage for auto glass may be worthwhile. by this they mean having the glass coverage as a zero deductible "rider" apart from the usual comprehensive (which has the usual $500 or $1000 deductible). anyway, they say auto glass is very expensive; nevertheless, I am a car newbie and don't know how expensive they mean. anybody out there familiar with auto glass prices who would be willing to comment whether $110 per year extra would be worthwhile for zero deductible auto glass coverage for two cars ('98 Camry and 2002 Ody)?

thanks

It will be different for each car. I replaced the windshield on our Ford Explorer (or used to be ours til we bought the Odyssey) for about $225 from a local glass company. It was the first one we had ever replaced.

You might want to check with your insurance, in the past our insurance has paid for repairs to dings at no charge in order to avoid having to replace the entire windshield later. I never signed up for anything, but that was also before I raised my deductible.

Here in MA, glass coverage with zero deductible is the standard. I could save about $25/year to have a $100 deductible but the savings isn't worthwhile IMHO.

In 20 years of car ownership, I've had to replace 2 windshields - both in the past year and covered under insurance. The paperwork for the Escort showed about $350 installed. The Ody paperwork wasn't priced but I would expect it to be in that area.

Like any insurance, it's basically gambling. Have you ever had to replace a windshield? Do your driving habits or routes expose you to the possibility? Glass today is softer and does pit much easier. Will the insurance cover the replacement in that case?

Good luck in your decision.
