Agreed, they are a bear. I found the problem is that I can just get to the back of the bulb with my hand, but the position is so awkward that I can't get any grip or leverage to turn the bulb and remove it with any force. Only thing I can tell you is to slightly loosen the 3? screws on the socket the bulb screws in to. Makes it MUCH easier to twist the old bulb out and twist the new bulb in. You can then re-tighten the screws. I was completely unsuccessful until I did this at which point the process went much quicker.
