Every once in a while I go out to the Ody in the garage and it is locked Neither my wife nor I has locked it.

Does the security system lock the van in some limited circumstances or sequence of events?

I swear we aren't locking it in the garage.

Anyone ?

This was just discussed, in the context of the EX anyway.

Apparently the security system has three settings, one of which is "wait 30 seconds then lock the doors and arm the alarm automatically".
I'd like to have that feature - automatic door lock and alarm activation. I was told in another thread that it's impossible on EX, while Honda genuine security system for LX can do that. Strange.

Haven't had it lock on me yet, but on two occasions I've been working in the garage (on my '94 Chevy pickup, which takes a lot of work to keep running) and something was pressing against the panic button on my EX's remote in my pocket...now that'll wake you up when that horn starts honking!

I think groupset nailed it. It's happened to me when something in my pocket hit the button.
In my MDX, if the remote is pressed to unlock the doors, and the doors are not opened within 30 secs, the doors automatically re-lock. However, I have not noticed that the doors lock by themselves if I have not locked the doors when exiting.
I posted the original message about the doors locking by themselves. And I still haven't quite accepted the explanation
, but no matter.

Because I'm a gadgetlover, I placed a small picture framer's clear plastic "bumper" over the lock button on the remote. It's instantly identifiable with my thumb when walking away from the car because it's raised. It also provides many more opportunities to bump the lock button, and I found myself locking the car from the kitchen when throwing down my purse. Oh, well, some gadgets come with unintended consequences. (I'm keeping the bumper: have grown to like it.)

I got curious on this thread, particularly after an experience this morning where my 6 year old son came back in crying (he's very sensitive) that he couldn't get the Ody doors to open (3-day old '02 EX). He loves to use the remote to go open the doors, but he has to unlock it first. Somehow, someway, he insisted that he had unlocked it but the door wouldn't open.

Well, I was able to get it open--I wondered why it was still locked, given that he insisted that he had unlocked it.

After reading this thread, particularly about the MDX, I just went out to check--sure enough, if you unlock the door(s) with the remote and then don't open a door within 25 to 26 seconds (by my count), the doors then re-lock themselves.

I can only presume in my son's case, that he may have hit the unlock button from a distance, but it was about 25 seconds before he got up close to the car and tried the door--but at that point, it had re-locked itself.

We've had this happen to us occasionally. It seems to lock itself for no apparent reason. I don't know the reason but it could be, as mentioned above, that we hit the unlock on or fob. ( or lock even). Its an annoying but minor problem.
The doors on our 99 EX used to lock by themselves and, at first, we assumed that one of us had hit the lock button on the remote. This started out as a minor annoyance, but soon became genuinely dangerous when the doors locked while open! Other systems, including interior lights, windshield washers and intermittent wipers became affected and sometimes refused to operate while the van was in motion.

Honda was baffled and swapped out many parts before discovering a corroded ground contact behind the driver's side B pillar. Since this has been fixed there has been no recurrence of the phenomena.

If you swear blind that you're not hitting the remote, ask the dealer to humour you and check out some ground contacts. It could save you a trip to the psychiatrist!

I definately experience the locking feature that Don pointed out about teh MDX. If i unlock teh ODY from my house and tehn return the keys to the key hook, by the time I get out to the van it's locked again. It took some experimentation but then eventually figured out that it was around 25 seconds that the van locks itself. I have not found this to be a problem yet. Mostly I think its so perhaps if y our walking away and accidently hit the unlock button while your going into the store, it will correct your mistake and protect your valuables. Just my opinion.

My 2000 LX has the remote keyless entry with alarm, and the dealer had set it for auto locking when the alarm automatically activated. I had to pull down the control unit from under the dash and set it for auto alarm activation without locking the doors. I found the auto lock to be dangerous as well, and if for some reason I ever left the key inside the van I'd be in big trouble. The manual that came with your alarm should have the info as to what settings do what, and you can change them yourself or just have your dealer do it.
Our 97 CRV with Honda alarm has the self locking feature you describe. Hit Unlock on the keyfob, if you do not open a door or trunk inside of 30 seconds, it automatically locks.
