I can not figure out why they are no longer auto-adjusting. I have personally verified that the adjuster wheel turns smoothly. This is going on for last 3 months. I had them manually adjusted at least couple of times during that period.

Exactly how fast do I have to be driving in reverse and slam the brakes so that they will auto adjust? And how come I did not have this issue for 11 years and started having this problem only after the *front* pads and rotors were replaced?

Check the self-adjuster spring for weakness and damage.

He hardware (springs) got replaced as a part of the rear brake job. This problem started *before* the rear brake job and continued *after* the rear brake job.
