Hi all! Any recommendation for a motor oil brand/type for an Odyssey that is driven no more than 5000 miles per year? Its a 2016 TE @ 95K miles (muzzled & new plugs). Its will be mostly our weekend car, so oil change will likely be less than once a year.

Manual says to change once a year if not driven enough miles in that span for a reason.

But FWIW, I drive about that much in a year, sometimes less. I don't do anything special, I just use whatever synthetic oil.

There’s a dedicated entire forum for oil recommendations. It’s called Bob Is the Oil Guy. Take a peek there for any and all oil related questions/information.

Oh my goodness! Don't send him into that viper's pit to ask a question like this.

OP - you are supposed to be changing the oil once a year, as mentioned previously. Just pick whatever full synthetic oil is the least expensive at the time you're buying (Costco and Walmart are usually the leading candidates for this) and you should be fine.

As pointed out, one year is the longest you should go on an oil change (and filter of course). Given the low cost of an oil change, it's worthwhile to respect that duration to protect your engine.

Also don't forget about brake fluid maintenance that is strictly time-based i.e. 3 years.

You have been here long enough and have seen what happens to Oil threads here. I'd rather have them vipers there than here. :p

The OEM oil is synthetic. The OEM filter has little marks to help you get the torque correct and a pre-lubed actual O-ring. Seems like an easy choice - no extra thought needed. There are 'better' options, but they won't get you better results (just change the oil once a year).

Can anyone tell me WHY you should change your synthetic oil annually when you only drive around 5k a yr?
What degrades in that oil that needs it to be changed (including filter, of course)? Viscosity, detergent ingredients, anti-acid ingredients, high pressure wear ingredients, etc?
Thanks,
Buffalo4,

I can't speak for others but I do as the Owner's Manual says and it clearly says, follow the MM on my 2007 or 12 months for an oil change. Our garage queen did not even have 5K miles per year early on and there have been a few years where we did not have the MM turn on but I did an oil change in month 12 or 13. 2021 was one of those years due to COVID.

I suppose you also blindly followed the 'manual' on only using Z-1 on the second gen ODY or otherwise your tranny might fail? :) :) :)
Thanks for the reply, but it didn't address my question.

PS: BTW, I also follow that 1 yr recommendation. o_O;):D

Any stats on the OEM oil filters filtering efficiency? I remember the old ones, back in the early 2ks, had a decent flow rate but not a good rating for smaller particles, overall, while even the lowest version of Fram was way higher. Fram, even the so-called OCOD, had a rating in the upper 90's, the OEM A01 had a efficiency rating in the 80's.
Sure, no thought needed. :)

Yep!! As I remember it, Assume, means making an Ass out of You and Me. :) Fun!!
So, did you blindly believe the Owner's Manual about the ONLY atf to use in the 2nd gen Ody was Z-1?
So, is the Honda Owner's manual the ???
It is good, but it is not the final word,
As always,
Keep up the good work. :)

Since you asked twice. For the record, I never did OWN a 2nd gen glass tranny Ody. My brother-in-law did and hence why I had registered in 2001 to the newly created forum by Jim.

I did own a 2001 Accord v6 and own my 2007 Odyssey which from the factory did come with Z1 and I did actually use Z1 thanks to the legendary glass trannies our Hondas came with. After my second tranny swap on the dealer's dime in the Accord, I switched to ATF change with Z1 and subsequently with DW1 every other oil change.

Back to the actual oil topic. I am NOT a scientist who specializes in lubrication. All I have read and heard is oil needs changing if not used for a year but open as it will eventually attract moisture which if the vehicle is NOT driven too much will accumulate as it does not have a chance to burn off. Hence why, at about 12 or 13 month mark, I change the oil out regardless of miles. Lets just say, for the $20 odd dollars and my own elbow grease to do the oil change, I can sleep better.

I did answer ONE of your two original questions (the first one) although you felt it was not helpful. :D

Wait till one of those you HAVE to change the oil every 3K or .... types comes along since we kept this open for this debate. :p

When I change it myself with quality synthetic oil it cost around $35 including filter and 30 minutes of my time so that is why I hit the 1 year interval or less and not worry about it, as more frequent will never hurt.
