Aloha gang!
first off I鈥檝e enjoyed reading stories and comments these past months trying to get answers to problems I have or my get in the future, look like I have joined the right forum! This is my first post, and it鈥檚 a crazy one! I鈥檝e read similar stories on here, so not the first馃槄

I purchased a used 05 odyssey touring 3.5 120k miles
About a 1.5 years ago , body and interior were in good condition but with an oil leak and needed crank seal , so I was able to get the ody fairly cheap (3k) knowing I was going to get it repaired. I鈥檝e had my neighbor/mechanic do the job, no warranty but has done great work in the past. Went ahead and got the water pump and timing done all at once ($700)
Fast forward to 3 months ago and 10k miles later ( I live Hawaii, small island done use a lot of miles) my wife calls me up in a panic, stalled on the side of the road, I only worked 2 min away, so dove up to the ody couldn鈥檛 get the dang thing started, initial thought was fuel pump. Get it towed home, do a self diagnostic,
ends up being a broken timing belt!!!! Due to faulty tensioner ( oil leaked from seal). After further inspection, cylinder 1,2,3 had good compression 150-160, cylinder 3,4,5 not good (60,50,0), bent valves in all 3 cylinders. I didn鈥檛 have the money to pay for another job so I took it upon myself to give it a go. I鈥檓 not a mechanic but my father is an old school ASE certified mechanic and my neighbor is there to help out too if I needed it. Got the parts from Napa and was able to work on it here and there throughout the 3 months I had an extra ride, and my work kept me busy and was only able to work every other weekend for about 2-3 hours. Finally was able to get thing dialed in. Or what I thought was dialed in.
Compression in cylinder 3,4,5 was 210, fuel pressure was 55, got new spark plugs, so I thought I would give it the very nervous crank to see if it starts, I let the fuel pump prime a bit then turned the key, it turned over but didn鈥檛 start , did it again, same thing but this time sounded like she wanted to go, but nothing 3rd time , called my wife to turn the key while I shot some starter fluid into the intake this time she fired up, just as long as the fluid would last, so the 4th time I shot fluid in right before she wanted to die and was able to keep her lit for about 7-8 seconds, the motor sounded great till it ran out of fluid. so now I felt like I was getting close spent the next couple days trying to figure why there was no fluid from the injectors when I turn the key. When I use a volt tester the injectors were getting power and would squirt fuel with each check, so injectors were getting power. So I unplug the power control module (PCM) were the injectors were getting power and what I think is telling the injectors to do there function, call my wife tell her to turn the key, while I look on, this time it was closer the the rest to stay lit, but still not enough, so I spray starter fluid like I have done before, and this is we鈥檙e things went south real fast, right as she cranked KABOOM 馃挜
plenum cover goes shooting across the garage bolts still connected , scared the bejesus out of the whole neighborhood, kids crying, neighbors coming over the whole Shabang, on top of that , a piece of the plenum shot threw my bedroom window, shattering the glass.
mat this moment, I am happy to be alive along with my family, everyone was safe. The motor backfired from me adding fuel what I thing is at the wrong time before my wife turned the key, this is what I think happened and now I鈥檓 kinda over the whole thing right now, just really want to give the van away, super mad at myself, and still don鈥檛 know why or what I did wrong for the van not to start without having to add fuel. My guess is a bad PCM. I would love to hear some of your expertise. There is a small piece of me that still wants to give it a go. I added some photos hope they help.
thank you all for reading and letting me vent a little. And thank you in advance for any ideas. I will be here to answer any questions you guys have.
Aloha!

Yikes! You are very lucky you were not hurt. Somebody else here recently had the same experience with a blown off plenum cover.

Sounds like your timing marks where not lined up...where you at TDC at the crank? It could be confusing as there are 3 marks on the pulley...

Aloha! As far as I knew it was lined up, this is the only pic I have before I started to put the plastic covers on , I sent to my brother but it鈥檚 hard to confirm, as in the pic it doesn鈥檛 look as center as it was looking right at it.
crank and both Cam sprocket and pulley were as straight as I could get them. I had to keep doing rotations as the pistons would keep bottoming out. There is only one TDC I was told.

I also rotated the crack by hand about 8 rotations to confirm there was no interruption When I had the belt on with tension.
