Brake "Popping" Noise??

For several months, any time I back out of my driveway or a parking spot, a very loud "popping" type noise is made by my brakes--almost like they were stuck then are now unsticking.

I've taken it in twice, and even though it does it for me several times daily, it never repeats it for them, so of course nothing is done.

Also, when driving and stopping at a light/stop sign, the brakes will sometimes make a loud clicking noise--like metal is clicking together or something. Anyone else have this problem? I'm sure the two are associated with the same thing. This noise did duplicate itself for the service department, and the manager said that was normal. I know that is BS None of my other cars have ever made that noise.

Obviously something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Has anyone else had this problem, and what was the fix/service bulletin number?

I have a 2000 EX with 25,000 miles on it

I have a mild click/cluck (I have no chickens in the van) when I back up and apply the brakes. I also have a LOT of rattling up front over broken pavement and have attributed all this to the brake calipers/pads bouncing around. I have been to the dealer three times with the problem and, since the last visit, have finally figured how I can prove where the noise is coming from, i.e. by putting the van up on the lift and banging on the front brake calipers with a rubber mallet. Also, a test drive with the brake lightly applied over bumps which cause the noise would be further proof, since the noise disappears when the brakes are on and the calipers/pads are kept from moving. I do not know if there will be much relief for this , except, possibly for the application of some of the anti-squeal stuff to the backs of the pads. One of these days, we'll see. If anyone out there had solved a similar dilema, please let us know.

Yes, we have had the same noise (2000EX) coming from the rear brakes. Sounds like a rock hitting the muffler. Honda service could not find a problem. It did not occur on their road test. Happens most often backing out of driveway going over the curb. Also when applying brakes going over railroad tracks. Don't notice it if my foot is off the brake. Seems to occur more on the brake release than on the brake application. Maybe once every ten trips.

There is a normal condition where the pads shift inside the calipers (disk brakes only). It will produce a click when you first apply the brakes when in a new direction (or have rolled back at a stop). I think it has to do with tolerances for the pad length and the mating opening in the calipers. I have had this on 2 other Hondas and seems to be normal.

The light clicking noise I hear is when driving forward and stopping.

The loud, rock popping type noise I get when backing up is VERY loud--you can tell something sounds stuck and is then unsticking, but it's not just the little click you get when stopping after driving forward.

And, my van didn't do this for the first 10,000 miles/1 year or so.

I've heard this once on my Ody. My Camry does this almost every time I hit the brakes in reverse. It has something to do with the front disc brakes. Long term, I do not believe it's a problem. My Camry has 86k miles on it with the original brakes.

Yep ours does that too. It doesn't do it every trip (I don't think so atleast), but I think I know exactly what you're talking about. :yup:

I do notice a noise that happens consistently, is when you're backing up and a "high" pitch noise comes from the back brakes. Anyone else have this? :dunno:

I get a click from the rear brake area when I apply the brakes backing out of the garage if the Ody has sat for several hours. Maybe this is the self-adjusting thing rear disk brakes are supposed to do?

On my 2002 Ody, if the windows are down, I hear a single fairly loud clicking noise from the brakes whenever I first apply the brakes after changing direction from forward to reverse. It seems there is some play in the pads that makes them slide one way when you are reversing then the other way in forward.

My dealer told me this is totally normal. I am surprised that Honda would allow this. It seems like an easy thing to fix by adjusting the "slop" in their brakes.

I've got it too. Every time I change direction (forward or backward) and the first time I apply the brakes, I get the popping sound.

Today the service mgr. at a local dealer told me that the clicking is normal for many Hondas and the Ody does it more than others. He had a brake pad at his desk to demonstrate what is going on because he gets asked about it all the time. He said that greasing the caliper where the pad clicks would take the noise away only temporarily.

Whether or not this is "normal" on Honda's is not the issue. These things should not be clicking/popping at all, under normal circumstances. Come to think of it, my '83 Civic doesn't even do this!

I've whined many times to the dealer, but it all fell on deaf ears, I doubt that American Honda's response would be any different. (sigh).

I have had my 02' EX in more than several times for this exact thing. The dealer checks the brakes, notes they are in "good working order" and sends me on my way with the same noise. It appears that "this is normal" excuse is given a lot. I really was disappointed with this "hidden feature" on my $30k vehicle. I understand that the dealer can't fix a bad design by the manufacturer but come on. With this many complaints, Honda has to know of this by now and at least come up with a fix or a redesign. I often get asked by others how I like my van, how many does it seat, etc and I tell them "I love it!" and then drive away with the CLICKING noise that doesn't sound "NORMAL"! Really though, I do love this van. It's many other "features",hidden or otherwise, fits into our family's lifestyle very well which is the reason why we bought it in the first place. Sometimes you got to take the good with the bad and as long as the brakes work, I guess I deal with it until the "fix" comes. (But I won't be holding my breath.)

The service mgr claimed that Honda had advised of a "fix," which included cutting a piece of plastic and attaching it adjacent to the pad. The mgr. was reluctant to do that because of the high temps of the brakes. I'm not sure that Honda actually came up with that idea :noo:.

 Did he ACTUALLY try it? And if he did, did it work? For how long? This so called "fix" doesn't sound right to me either. I used to work in the automotive industry myself and I certainly don't want anybody coming up with a cheesy fix like this on my BRAKES!!

Lucky me, not only do I have the "clicking struts" but I also have the "clunking brakes." Our Ody is in for an oil change today and I gave them a list of 5 warranty items to look for, including the click and the clunk. Will post my success (or not) after I get the van back.

Well, I just picked up the Ody and the service manager and I had a long talk about the strut noise and the brake noise. He copied me a page from a service bulletin manual that explains the brake sound that is made after a change in direction, that when you apply the brake the first time, the sound is considered normal. The sound comes from where the caliper pads set inside the caliper brackets.

I will post the strut information on that thread.

rear brake 'clunk'

My '02 has been making the same popping sound you all describe after i back out of the drive and have to stop at the first intersection. At least that's when I notice it consistantly. Guess it's a Honda thing I will have to get used to and quit worrying about. Thanks again, OdyClub for the right info when I needed it. 18K miles in a year, crosscountry trip and riding fine.

brakes have popped on '00 & '02 ody of mine

I had a '00 EX ody which had the infamous brake pop. At first, the dealer replaced the pads with some excuse of dry rot and odyssey sitting in a new vehicle lot while awaiting transportation to dealer from assembly or US entry point. On my current '02 ody it also experiences this brake pop. My current dealer (different than '00) told me this is common with ody's and should only happen as mentioned by others when changing directions. I experience it a little more often than that and sometimes even if there is no direction change.

I just stumbled upon this thread while I was looking for help on this exact noise you guys described!

I can only hear it if the window is down, and mainly at the stop sign at the end of my street (which is up a hill).

I guess I'm not too concerned about it, if Honda isn't. I'm just glad it wasn't something worse like some timing chain deal, etc...

I do find the gas sloshing business unnerving, just because I keep thinking that the gas tank is going to fall off one day!

14K miles on the '02 EX-L and just today heard the popping brake noise from the front brakes for the first time.

It happens when the van has been parked overnight or for an hour or more. You get in, start the engine, backup brake, pull forward, start to brake in a forward direction for the first time and 'click' or 'pop'...you hear it.

Windows were up both times today and it is the first I've heard it in over a year. Soon I'll check the pins that the calipers slide on to make sure they are well lubed with hi-temp grease and also put some of the anti-squeal compound on the back of the pads.
