Recently got our 02 EXL (400 miles now). However I have noticed that during idle (either with the transmission in Park or at a stop) there is quite a bit of vibrations coming from the engine (sort of bumpy). Once you are on the move the ride gets much more smooth. Also the bumpiness is more significant in the mornings (cold start) than in the afternoon.
Has anybody else noticed this behavior ? Is this normal engine break-in behavior for the new MDX engine.
Thanks in advance.

This "might" be normal but it doesn't sound typical to me. My '01 LX is absolutely smooth at all times. So is my friends '00 LX.

With todays computer controls on the engines timing and fuel injection, any number of sensors could be causing this and only the proper diagnostic gear will find the problem, hopefully. Then again, it could also be something as simple as an idle speed adjustment.

If this symptom is consistant, happens all the time, I'd certainly ask the dealer about it.

Good luck!

I have a 2000 LX and from day one I complained of exactly what your experiencing. At idle, out of gear, it stumbles. When in gear it's very smooth. The dealer adjusted engine mounts, what a bonehead answer. I now have 17,000 on it and it contiunues to stumble (again, only at unloaded idle.) I've had so many other problems with this van that I just live with that one. Good bye Honda.

No, it isn't!

Take a look at the Service Manual, Engine Mount Control System, Troubleshooting (page 4-46 in the 1999-2001 edition): "Follow this procedure if the engine vibrates excessively when idling." Sounds reasonable to me.

At 2,200 mi, my '02 LX does not idle quite as smooth as it did on the test drive, though it is smoother at Park than in Drive. But it's still "acceptable".
Steering wheel "chatters" a bit at 60-65,which is a nuisance.
It's such a hassle to spend the day around the Service Department so I'll save the list for my first oil change at 3,500.
