Hey guys, new member here so sorry if this is posted elsewhere on the site, I have an 08 oddyssey, lately, its had a burning coolant smell from the front of the engine, and when its idling at operating temperature it smells of burning oil, it gets strong when in reverse. I've noticed a small leak by cylinder 3 of oil (maybe something else as well?) and a slight milky color on the oil cap, has no real urge to move when it's in drive with your foot off the gas unless it's cold out with the engine cold. Doesnt seem to want to stay in ECO mode. (I just found out about the VCM muzzler) van has just under 180k miles on it, any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Sorry it's a little on the lengthy side.

Hmmm, multiple concerns. Milky color on oil cap could be coolant in the oil meaning a head gasket is leaking if that is true. What is the history of the trans fluid service? What does the trans fluid look like? It's supposed to be bright red. While not super common there are some reports of an internal radiator failure causing transmission fluid and coolant to mix which can cause the transmission symptoms you are describing. It's high time for a good look at the coolant and transmission fluid to see what they look like.

The lack of performance could be caused by a leaking head gasket, worn rings, or other things. I would start with compression and leakdown tests to assess the condition of the engine mechanicals.

The milky appearance of the oil is caused by moisture. A chemical test of the coolant would determine if it's coming from a leaking head gasket.

It could also be caused by a bad PCV valve, or a stuck thermostat that's making the engine run not as hot as spec.

Have you scanned the computer for stored codes? Is there any smoke visible from the exhaust?

The engine is running like it should the lack of performance seemed to be a short lived issue, maybe the VCM? That's interesting about the PCV valve I didnt even think of it, the coolant hasnt dropped in level in a while but the oil cap has a very slight milk color to it. The temp gauge has been right where it's always been running, just touching the little temperature symbol. I'm going to pull the plugs tomorrow afternoon to see what they look like I'm unsure the last time they've been changed, I've owned this van for 9 months and have put nearly 23K miles on it. I just had a transmission service performed with the last oil change maybe 1500 miles ago, it's still a deep red color. Im not sure of the trans service history before but when I bought it, it had a dealer sticker in the window for its past oil change, would honda have the records of it? I have not scanned the computer for any stored codes yet but I havent noticed the engine light flash at all. Thank you both for these suggestions I'll keep you updated with what I find

Honda won't, but most dealers do keep a history of work that they have done on each vehicle. That dealer may have done maintenance on the van in addition to the oil change.

You could be more specific here about the "transmission service 1500 miles ago". If that was not done at a Honda dealer or independent Honda specialist, it could have the wrong fluid. Or they might have used some trans fluid exchange machine. A "trans service" done correctly on a Honda is a drain & fill with OEM fluid (or a couple of others very specific) One does that three times with a lot of driving in between to replace all the fluid. Not just around the block.

You might have a look around at threads in the 2005-2010 section about oil leaks. There are some common places.

I got it flushed at a dealer instead of the normal drain and fill because I wasnt sure of the previous service history. I also got a chance to check the spark plugs, definetly need to replace them. the one In i believe cylinder 4(the one closest to the passenger headlight) has a short ring of oil around the threads. The others had the same wear but no oil, I read that's Indictive of a valve cover gasket? Sorry the picture isnt better it was dark out when I got to it.
Also I got the chance to clean the engine so I'm hoping to have a better idea of the scale of the leak if it still has one. The coolant hasnt dropped at all and the oil still seems okay other than that slight milky cover on the fill oil fill plug.
