I would not expect Honda to seriously upset their dealer network by allowing direct factory purchases.

Few organizations that spend as much developing their sales channels will turn around and destroy them overnight by competing with them.

There are a few industries where competition between manufacturers and their channels works, but motor vehicles hasn't proven to be one of those.

Yeah, but ya gotta take several acres of that wonderful backwoods land along with the Odyssey. You know, those spots where ya can put a "mobile home" and some o' them lawn chairs and drink beer and shoot at your neighbor's Chevy.

There's got to be a catch. What's the downside?

The downside is that hidden in the agreement is a winter cabin in Frozen A**, Idaho, without beer or firewood......

Along those lines, DC does give their plant workers discounts (I think they are called "green sheets"), which can be used by the worker or given to friends (at least I think they can, unless there is something less than honest which must be done, such as assuming your friends identity). Someone in my family has been offered such a deal and the discount was substantial.

My understanding is that even employees of the manufacturers can't buy direct due to franchise agreements, etc. I believe they all offer some sort of program where they go to a dealer with some sort of authorization and get a substantial discount on the vehicle. The dealer in turn gets a flat amount to cover the processing.

I'll bet and I think Jerry was kidding about there being no beer or firewood. The **real** downside is you have to share the cabin with some real hairy guy who keeps calling you "Rita".</font>
How much beer?
