Buying out of state (any disadvantages?)

1313 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  jvennitti
We live near a state line and were wondering if it is much of a hassle to buy out of state. Would we have to do extra paperwork or what would it involve that we wouldn't have to do if we stayed in our own state?

Thanks for your seasoned advice!

We bought our ody in Ohio as well. The one disadvantage is that we had to go to the DMV before the temporary tags expired to register the vehicle and pay sales taxes. Fortunately, VA car sales tax is lower than OH.

The only other disadvantage is that the dealer from which you purchase the van might be more "caring" about problems you might encounter in order to keep your business. On the other hand, warranty work can be handled at any dealer.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Good Luck,

Jeff

I did not save money on the cost of the van itself, but I did save a lot on the dealer-installed things, such as fog lights and cassette player. The local VA dealer wanted $50 more for the fog lights and about $300 more for the cassette player. We also had aftermarket leather and entertainment system added. They were about $2000 less on those two items combined. That seemed like a reasonable savings for the 12-hour drive, round trip.
